We will be staying in Castelrotto in the Dolomites in June but would like some feedback about how long to stay in that one area? We like to hike but is it too long a stay if we have three nights there before heading to Lake Como? Thanks!
Lucky you the dolomites are stunningly beautiful. Skip Bolzano unless the museum is imp to you. I would say min 2 nights in Castelrotto. you will need a car there or take a tour. reserve quickly as lodging is limited espec moderate euro lodging.
Three nights in Castelrotto will give you two full days to hike---the minimum, in my opinion.
I have done both the hikes suggested in Rick's book---the hike to the Bolzano Hütte, and the one around Sasso Lunho/Sasso Piatto (although we varied it with a gondola ride up the middle to shorten it. (You can see the pass between the two in this photo: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4284737). Both hikes start from the Alpe di Siusi above Castelrotto, so you would need a way to get up there (there is a very good bus system which we used). both hikes are spectacular; comparable in scenic beauty to many of the hikes I have done in the Swiss Alps and the Sierra Nevada of California.
Thanks so much for your information on the Dolomites! We can't wait to see such spectacular scenery.
