How long to get thru security in Munich?

Our flight to Pisa has a 1hr.20 min. layover in Munich. Is that enough time to get through security?

You might get more answers if you post this in the Germany Forum, but I have to ask, are you arriving from outside the EU? If so, you might need more time for Customs and Passport Control.

Since it sounds like you are just changing planes in Munich, you should not have to go through security, just passport control if you are arriving from outside the Schengen Treaty Zone. That usually only takes about 10 minutes in my experience. Assuming you are traveling on a thru ticket, your luggage will automatically be transferred to your Pisa flight.

As noted above and assuming you are coming from the US, you will pass through immigration, not security and not customs. You might be ok, you might not be ok. I have waited less than 5 minutes to pass through immigration at the Munich airport and have also waited nearly 45 minutes as several planes arrived around the same time. I'd say you have a pretty good shot at getting through in that timeframe.

Yes. I generally fly Lufthansa from SFO to Florence, via FRA or MUC. And MUC is by far my favorite airport in Europe for transfers. It has never taken me more than 20 minutes from arrival gate from the US to departure gate to the intra EU flight.

Of course it will also depend on whether your arriving flight arrives at the gate timely and that is unpredictable. But once you deplane, it will be quick.

On the way back home it will take a bit longer, because for US bound flights there is an additional set of security checks just before the gates designated for US flights.

I've always found when transiting Frankfurt airport for connecting flights, that passengers must first go through Passport control and but also through security again for the next flight. The same has been true in Amsterdam and other airports. A time of 1H:20M should be adequate, but a lot will depend on how many flights are arriving at that time, and how many staff they have working at the airport that day.

On a trip a few years ago, I had a one hour connecting time at FRA for a flight to FCO, and I barely made it. I went directly from security to the next flight. There was no time to spare and I arrived at the next flight just as they were going to "close" boarding.

I just transited through Munich in December and they are no longer doing security checks at the gate for US bound flights.
