How long to expect to get through Rome FCO airport on arrival from US

We will be arriving in Rome at 7am from the US. What is the airport like, and what can we expect as far as time to get through immigration, baggage etc.? I need to request a time for pick up for our transportation and am not sure how much time to allow.

Impossible to predict. Depends on number of other international arrivals, speed of delivery at the baggage carousels, crowds and queues at Passport Control, among other factors. Could be an hour, could be 2. Are you travelling into Rome? Are you aware that the official taxis have a fixed rate into central Rome?

Thank you. I was not aware of the fixed rate, I was planning on booking private transport as we are a party of 6 with luggage. Do you know what the fixed rate is, or how I can find out?

Note that the fixed rate applies to within the Aurelian walls, which is most places you would stay, except parts of Trastevere and near the Vatican.

I would verify the flat rate applies with your hotel, then print the name and address of the hotel on a card to give to the driver. Also verify the price, and let the driver know you only have credit card, no cash.

Fixed rate applies to party of 4 with luggage
6 people will be slightly more and require a taxi van

If you book a private transfer you just give them your flight info and they will monitor arrival-at least any reputable service will do that

I would ask hotel for referrals

With six people and luggage you will need two taxis. The fixed rate applies up to four passengers. Getting through immigration is a dice roll. Generally I would allow at least an hour, maybe 90 minutes. However, once on a Saturday morning with only two agents on duty, took us over three hours to clear immigration. You might contact Roma Cab (not a taxi company but a limo service) for a quote for your group. They will wait for you if delayed.

Another factor to consider is the implementation of EES. If this is your first entry since the system went into effect this may add some additional processing time at passport control.

Personally, I would just opt for two taxis. Eliminate the stress regarding timing. The cost works out at close to 19 euros a person which is quite reasonable.

I can highly recommend Mich's Ride Rome www.michsride.com ([email protected]) for private driver service from FCO. They have late model passenger vans that will easily accommodate your party and luggage. I used them to get to my tour hotel last February and they also provided transportation within the city for the Best of Rome RSE tour I was on.
