How long is needed in Verona

My girl scout troop will be traveling from Venice to Salzburg on 16 June. We will be traveling by train and plan to take the route that goes thru Verona so the girls can see Juliette's house and a few things in Verona. Can you recommend how long of a layover we will need in Verona? There is a train that gets into salzburg pretty late so I also wonder if anyone knows how late the city bus runs in salzburg. It will be a sat. nite.
thanks

We stopped on that train trip and stored our bags at the train station. We needed only 3-4 hours to get into town (we took a taxi for time reasons but there are buses) and see the sights we were interested in, and return to the next train. We saw the incredible roman arena you see right as you enter the city, then walked on according to the Rick Steves recommended walk. We went farther into the city than you might with your scout troop, to see some of the oldest churches. The point is that this is not hard to do.

To add to the previous posters information. My husband and I walked from the train station to the center of Verona, the main piazza with the Roman theater. It took us about 15 minutes. It's an easy walk, but not sure how many girls you will have with you...that might be like herding cats to keep them all together. It downpoured rain when we were in the city...we'd taken a day trip from Bologna to see the sites. We only got to see the Roman colosseum and didn't make it to Juliet's balcony...too cold, wet. We did get a 1/2 price ticket to go inside the colosseum, since no one was venturing out..but it was too rainy to go much past the passage ways.. I'd recommend at least 5-6 hours to see some of the sites there, trying to do it in less than 4 or 5 hours would be rushing too much. Just my opinion.

I heard from WeisseTaube, our hotel in salzburg, that the city bus to get to the hotel will run until !:00am that nite so we should have time to enjoy Verona. I have 5 high school age girls that are very responsible and will stay together. I have traveled with them since they were in the 1st grade. However, this will be our first international trip and the first time I have not taken a planning trip to their future destination before I take the girls. thanks for the help
