We are planning on going from Rome to Pompeii for a day trip. What would you recommend for amount of time to spend there and must sees?
Plan on a 12 to 14-hour day doing this as a day trip from Rome, definitely doable but expect a long day. Get as early a start as possible, say 7am, have breakfast on the Rome - Naples train. Figure on about 6 hours round-trip train travel time, travel time only. To the 6 hours, add at least 3 hours to see Pompeii itself, plus at least 1 to 1.5 hrs to see the Archaeological Museum in Naples, which shows you the artifacts originally in Pompeii. Then add the time to get to the Rome train station, the time to get back to your hotel, etc.
We took friends to see Pompeii and used the exact route that Kent lays out (how 'bout that!). We left a little after 7 AM and got back into Rome after 9 PM. It was a full, exhausting, but rewarding day for them! Seeing the Museum in Naples is important and helps you realize just how splendid Pompeii was. Good Luck!

I was actually looking for info on this today too :)
I was just wondering, is it ok for me to travel there on my own?? I am a 23 year old woman. I would actually be on an organised tour at the time, but will be visiting rome at the end of the trip with an Italian friend (who doesnt want to go to naples/pompeii because she said its unsafe) but I really want to see Pompeii.
Leeanna,
You should have no problem traveling on your own to Pompeii. Naples' "rough and tumble" reputation often scares folks off but the latest mayor has really cracked down on many issues. While you must perhaps be more vigilant in Naples for pickpockets, etc, you will be safe! Have a GREAT time seeing Pompeii!
