Does anyone know how long I can visit Italy without getting a work permit? I am planning to sightsee for 4 weeks. Is that okay?
You can spend up to 3 months in Italy on just your passport, as a tourist. If you want to be there longer than 3 months, or if you want to work in Italy, it gets more complicated.
Jane - I have to disagree with Kent - It's easy to stay there FOREVER !!! Find a Great Italian guy and get married!!
Ciao, Greg
He is right; however, about the rest, in the event you don't choose to get married -
Have Fun
The rule is really for the entire Schengen region (effectively the EU). Within any 180 days window you can only be in the region for 90 days. I have travel in and out of the region (with and without a work permit) and they never really checked though.
Have fun

We have been here for 4 years, totally legally, Visas, Permesso di Sogiorno, Carta Identita, etc. The tourist limit, no Visa, is 90 days though as others mentioned.
That being said - we have met Americans that have been here (some for 20 years) with no legal docs! I think it is getting harder to do - but some have and continue to do so. I would not recommend it.
