We will be in Florence mid-May and I’m trying to decide if we should book a skip the line tour for the Duomo. We are early risers and plan on booking the first Dome climb time spot. I see that you can’t reserve an entrance time for the Duomo itself. If we got in line 30 minutes before opening do you think the line would be crazy? If so, has anyone taken a tour of the Duomo that they enjoyed? TIA!

In 2019 we stayed at an apartment on the street leading from the left transept. We could look out our window and see a long line along the left side of the church. Depending on the time of day, you can check the webcam to see if there is any line at all on the left side. If you need a timed ticket in this Covid travel situation, the line might be greatly diminished.
Our last trip to Florence (pre-covid) we saw a line around the block for the Duomo -- so we kept walking, came back a few hours later and got right in. No tour, just wandered.
Baptistry should not be missed -- amazing mosaics and very short line.
I'll agree with Laura, Megs. We found the exterior of the church to be more impressive than the interior - although the floor is splendid - and ESPECIALLY when illuminated at night. The interior of baptistry, however, is a real piece of work: the mosaics are stunning!!
The Duomo museum is terrific and we were able to walk in without a line in late May, 2018
