How is the drive from Sorrento to Matera ? and back to Ravello ?

Has anyone driven from Sorrento to Matera ? and back from Matera to Ravello ? How are the roads and is it doable ?
I live and drive in a big city everyday . We would be traveling in mid September. Coming from a over night in Capri.
It was suggest that I take a boat from Capri to Salerno and then pick up a car, but Europe car has limited hours on a Saturday ,
and what I can tell is it will not line up the the ferry times. It also looked like I would have to take a ferry from Capri to Postitano and then another to Salerno to get to eurpe car .location or walk 20 minutes to Europ car , two different docking stations ?
any suggestions ?
thanks

Have you checked car rental hours in Sorrento?
Leaving from here adds about an hour. But might be an option.

This is not doable as a day trip. While google maps may say it's 2:15 from Salerno, which is the best route, it will take at least 30-45 minutes longer. You can then add another half hour for parking.

The roads are fine. Easily as good as their US counterparts. ( I have not been to Matera, but have driven eastward from Salerno, before heading north toward Foggia)

Are you trying to come from Capri, rent a car drive to Matera and end up in the Ravello, all in one day? If so it looks like all you would do that day is 'travel'.

Just traveling Capri to Matera will be your primary activity for that day

Yeah, you need to do a reality check using google maps to find driving times - and assume any drive will be longer when you add traffic, pit stops, and driving on unfamiliar roads. Also bear in mind that it takes more than 5-10 minutes to rent a car. I rented one in Salerno 2 years ago. On picking it up, I had to wait while they sent someone to pick up the car and bring it to the office. On returning it, there were 2-3 customers ahead of me, and it took even longer than the pick-up.

You can't use Google Maps to do a reality check, they used a Ferrari as Google car and hired a 20 something single guy to drive it

Gmaps is perfect inside urban areas, otherwise you should use www.viamichelin.com (or both for planning).

As you drive from Salerno to Potenza, you'll be traveling over the Apennine mountain range, so expect not only changes in elevation, but slower speeds. The remainder of the trip is hilly in some spots and flat in others. Roads are good.
