How is my 22 day Italy itinerary sounding so far? First trip.

I want to know is this current itinerary comfortably doable and what areas can I eliminate or shave off a day and not be missing something or be way too tired? The flight is fixed as well as the week in Tuscany reserved. Preparing to make hotel, bnb, or hostel accommodations in other areas. I want to hit the highlights and experience the local flavor. Thanks for your help!! April/May: 22 days plus 2 flying days: Flight reservations confirmed Fly in to Pisa 1. Tuscany for one week ( won a trip to a 16th century townhouse 15km from SW of Sienna ) with car day trips throughout Tuscany. This week can not be altered.
2. Check out of Tuscany townhouse and turn in car in Sienna. 3. Train to Florence: 2 nights stay 4. Cinque Terra: 2 nights 5. Train to Roma: 5 nights ( possible day trip to Pompeii) 6. Train to Venice: 3 nights Train/ bus to Cortina: 2 nights to visit a friend Bus/ train from Cortina to Milan: 1 night stay in Milan Fly home from Milan Linate: 7:55am

Here's a vote for Ostia Antica instead of Pompeii. We went there in May 2008 and really enjoyed it. Here are some photos and video clips of our easy daytrip there from Rome, if you're interested in checking it out.

Hi Lynne,
It looks good. Only comment I have is that with a week outside of Siena in the townhouse, you could visit Florence from there, then devote those two nights to other segments. I'd add a night to the CT and another to Venice. Also, the train trip between Siena and the CT is pretty arduous, at least 3 if not 4 trains. We found it exhausting. Since you have a car, you can eliminate all but one train by driving to LaSpezia and dropping off there, continuing to your CT destination. Personally I never have enough time in Venice, anvil's if by chance you tire of La Serenissima, you can always day trip to Padova or the islands of the Laguna.

I think the itinery is comforably doable. My wife and I squeezed in more than you are doing in 21 total days and we did not have a problem. We are close to 70. You will get many different opinions on this itinery, especially the time in Florence, CT, and maybe Venice. If you have more than a general interest in art, you may want to add a day to Florence and take away a day from Rome. We stayed 2 nights in Florence and visited the Acadamia, Uffizzi, Borgella, and walked to the top of the Duomo, as well as walking to the Piazza Michaelangelo. Yes, we were tired, but it was worth it. We have only a general interest in art so long stays in the museums was not necessary. Unless you want to do alot of hiking, 2 nights in CT is fine. We stayed in Manarola. Billy's is a great restaurant at the top of Manarola. Great seafood. Does not sound Italian, but it is very. Not familiar with Cortina. Time everywhere else sounds fine. Have a great time.

It sounds dreamy to me. Depending on where you have to drop the car in Siena (I assume that's mandatory), you may want to take the bus to Florence. Just depends on which you are closer to from the rental office. Pompeii is a long day trip from Rome. If you decide not to, consider going to Ostia Antica instead - much closer.

sounds good, my only input would be for more time in Florence and bus to Florence may be better option than train depending on rental car location...

My advise? Follow Rick Steve's guidance.

We have a one week stay booked in Cortona. Any hints on how to do day trips to other interesting sites. We enter and leave Rome.

Thanks,

Mark
