How far is Tiburtina bus station from FCO?

We will be arriving from the US to FCO on a Sunday in May at 8:15 AM. There will 3 of us. We already have our Airbnb booked in Siena.
I have read the forums saying the Flixbus is the best way to get from FCO to Siena Piazza Gramsci. Has anyone done this? What was your experience like?

  • What is the best way to get from FCO to Tiburtina bus station?

  • How long will it take to get to the bus station?

  • Could we make a 10:15 bus if we get into FCO at 8:15? Or would it better to get the 2:30 bus?

  • Does the bus station have anywhere to store luggage?

  • Is there anything to do within walking distance of the bus station?

  • Is the bus station in a safe area?

Thank you !

If arriving from outside the Schengen zone ( e.g from the US), I would put the odds about equal with Satan getting a glass of ice water.

How long will it take to get to the bus station?

Allowing less than an hour would be shaving it pretty thin, if taking any kind of public transport. Taxi might be a bit faster.

The Tiburtina bus station seems to be extremely close to the Tiburtina railway station. There are frequent local trains from FCO to Tiburtina Station. These are not the same as the Leonardo Express; those trains go to Roma Termini.

On Sunday mornings there are 3 trains per hour--not on an every-20-minutes schedule, however. Travel time varies from 48 to 70 minutes.

I'm no expert on getting through Fiumicino, having done it only once, but I wouldn't count on making the 10:15 bus. A lot can happen to keep you from getting out of the airport quickly.

We took a Flixbus roundtrip Tiburtina–Siena, but we were already in Rome so I can't answer your FCO questions.

The bus station and the Tiburtina metro & train station are in a safe area. The only thing I saw to do in the area was a coffee bar, but I wasn't looking for anything else.

What I like to tell people about the bus station is that when we exited the Tiburtina metro station (and presumably there are several exits) we could not see the bus station even though it is not even a block away. We were below street level and the bus station is on street level, so all we had to do is go up some stairs, cross a street, and there was the huge, outdoor bus station with many buses parked and waiting for passengers.

Our Flixbus was great, nonstop, very comfortable and fast. The Flixbus app is very useful to have. The toilet on one bus was not working, so maybe don't count on it --- there's a bathroom at the bus station and also at the coffee bar I mentioned. Board early to get a good seat. Our Flixbus went to the Siena train station rather than to the center of Siena, so if the schedule of that route works better for you, you could take that bus and then a taxi from the Siena train station (we just took the escalators and walked).

Leave yourself a generous cushion of time to manage the transfers of FCO to FCO train station to Tiburtina to the bus station to your bus --- it takes more time than you might think to orient yourself and to locate the next step of the trip, even if you can read and speak Italian.

2 hours from landing to bus boarding? That is next to impossible.
Even if the plane lands on time I would plan on 3 to 4 hours before you can be on that bus.

The Tiburtina bus station is adjacent to the train station. Don't take the Leonardo Express. Instead, get on the FM1 out of the airport; it stops at Tiburtina. There isn't much to do around there, so take your time. It's at the intersection of a bunch of major roads, so it doesn't really offer much in the way of a walk.
