Hey there, we are taking the high speed train from Rome to Naples in a few weeks. We want to rent a car at a place that is easier to get to Amalfi than driving in Naples. First, how long is train ride from train station to airport and are car rental places located at the airport? Is getting onto the route to Pompeii from airport fairly simple? Thanks

From Napoli Centrale, take a taxi, about 22 euro or the Alibus 4 E. Time, dependent on traffic, 15-30 min.
Quick drive to the autostrada.
Around 30 minutes to Pompeii Scavi.

From Naples Central Station there are buses outside to airport, but ....
Word on the street is Naples Ferryport has best car rental rates, check. This is 10-15 minute bus ride or $12 Euro taxi ride from train station.
Rental cars CANNOT be taken on ferries! Be sure that you "need" a car in the region as all sights and towns are accessible via public transport, you may want to check luggage at Naples station see Pompeii by Circumvensuvia train, then rent car and get underway down coast!
Most rental cars in Europe are hatch backs, no real trunk. Don't leave anythng in the car, theives target sights like Pompeii looking to score.

I would stay on the Freccia Rossa train all the way to Salerno, which is closer to Amalfi (on the opposite end of the Amalfi Coast), then drive back the Amalfi Coast from Salerno to Amalfi. That way you get to see half of the Amalfi Coast on the very first day (you can do the other half from Amalfi to Positano after you get settled.
All major rental companies (and I mean ALL of them, like Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, SicilybyCar, and whatever) are in front of the station, 200 ft away at most, at the corner with Corso Garibaldi, which is the street that leads you right to Amalfi. It couldn't be any easier.

Roberto makes a good point, by staying on train and driving back.
Although once you see the craziness on the roads you may think twice about driving yourself! :)
Enjoy....and if swimming pack some flat light inexpensive water shoes as they will be needed on rocky bottoms, and U.S. sizes are not easy to find also they sell out fast and do not get restocked very quickly...
