How far in advance to buy train tickets?

Hello,

I need to travel from Florence to Venice in mid-October. How far in advance would you suggest I buy my train ticket? I also want to travel from Amalfi to Florence in mid-October as well. How far in advance should those tickets be purchased?

Thank you.

You can purchase your tickets now. There are fast trains that can sell out- however that is unlikely-there are multiple trains all day long.
Mid October is basically a week away

There is no train in Amalfi. Take the ferry to Salerno then fast train to Florence- you can buy that ticket now as well.

ETA-if you mean NEXT October it is way too soon- start looking next July.
There are discounted tickets available for fast trains but do read the restrictions.

Railroad ticket are NOT priced like our airline tickets. There are three price levels -- Base (always available - 24-7.) , Economy, and Super Economy -- in both first and second class. These two are discount tickets with restrictions that are available in limited numbers prior to departure. There will be more discount tickets available for a 5am train than a noon train. But once those tickets are gone they are gone. No later additional releases. Those tickets will sell out early especially on popular runs. At this points most of the mid-Oct tickets are probably gone. The discount tickets have restrictions -- no refund, no change, no ett.,etc. It is helpful to purchase discount tickets as early as possible AND if you are absolutely certain of your travel schedule. Otherwise buy them when you need them. It is possible that train is sold out BUT it is extremely rare -- so you wait an hour and take the next train.

“Railroad tickets are NOT priced like our airline tickets. There are three price levels…”
Not entirely true.
ItaloTren has Club Executive which is the top of the line and never goes on sale.
Sorrento to Firenze is €130.
We are taking ItaloTren from Caserta to Milano on October 25th for €320 for 2. We think that is a reasonable price.

Trenitalia has 6 price levels.

Hello,
The earlier you buy the better pricing. Use www.Trainline.com to research and then buy from either Trenitalia or Italo as Trainline is a 3rd party and charges a small fee on top of pricing.
