How far in advance should I purchase train tickets?

Couldn't get any specific recommendations when searching, but do these seats get "sold out"? And, is there another site besides trenitalia (which I found a bit confusing at first) to search for train fares?

Looking for "no change" trains from Orvieto to Rome AND from Rome to Napoli.

Thanks!

There is rarely a reason to buy a regional train in advance unless that is somehow important to you. Buying the high speed Rome-Naples train in advance could save you money if you are comfortable committing to a certain day/train.

Trenitalia has Rome-Naples trains every hour or so that only take 1 hour 13 minutes. The base fare (you won't pay more than this for regular) is 48 euros. I checked one week out and super economy were at 26.9.

Italo trains also go on this route frequently and take the same amount of time. I looked at the same date one week out and Flex fares were 45.0 euros and economy fares were 19.90 euros.

There are trains that go from Orvieto to Rome without changes. They cost 8.6 euros with no savings for advance purchase.

When making a search on Trenitalia the number of changes, if any, is listed in the 4th column of the search results page. Or count the number of train # above the departure hour.

Regional trains have no reserved seats, so they can't sell out. But Regional ticket purchased online do not need to be time-stamped before getting on the train, it's one thing less to worry about.

Discounted tickets of high speed trains are not available on the day of travel, so in some way discounted tickets do sell out.

The Full price tickets of high speed trains rarely sell out, I'd say never on a route served by two competing companies who run 2 high speed trains per hour from Rome to Naples.

In short, You can always pay the expensive walk-up fares at the last minute, get a BASE ticket and jump on the first train departing to Naples.

As explained above, Italotreno calls the full price tickers Flexi instead of BASE: different name, better T&C if you are late, same extortionate price.
