we have a villa in Castiglion Fiorentino and have a car. want to go to Cinque Terra for the day??? how far and should we take a train?

Drive to La Spezia and then take the train from there to each of the 5 little towns.
Use Google Maps or Bing Map to get an estimate on the distance.

3 and 1/2 hours on a good day by car to Riomaggiore. Train varies but 4.5h+ is the minimum you should expect and you need at least 3 separate trains. Ditch the train.
I wouldn’t take this day trip at all. Too far for only a day.
If I want to see the sea from Castiglion Fiorentino I’d go to the Maremma Coast, like Mt. Argentario, or Castiglion della Pescaia or the Maremma Park, on on the Adriatic somewhere in the Marche region. Either coast would be only a couple of hour drive, maybe 2.5 hours at most.
