I have been looking into taking an Amalfi coast tour. From my understanding, it would take a few hours by train to get there, but the tour company I am looking into says it will take approximately 2 1/2 hours to get there by car. Does that seem accurate?
It is impossible to get there by train from Texas :-)
I assume that's not what you mean. IMHO you'll get better answers if you give your starting point in Italy...
Hi Jill,
getting to the Amalfi Coast from the North by train, you will most likely take a train as far as Sorrento. From there, you will need to get a local bus which travels the coast from Sorrento along the coast to Amalfi, positano, praiano, minori, maiori, etc.
Driving from Rome (if that is where you are starting) will indeed take 2 1/2 hours or more. The road is a coastal curvy road with one lane coming, one lane going. Any traffic, accident, falling rocks, etc can slow things down considerably.
Oops. :) We are staying in Rome. So, basically it sounds like either way, it is going to take me a few hours?
Train it. You don't want to drive anywhere near Naples. It will take far, far longer by car because you are in a foreign land with foreign signs, etc... You will spend a lot of time renting the car and then getting "un-lost" in both Rome and the Naples area in addition to the drive.
Oops. Left out that detail as well. We are not driving in italy, it is a tour group who picks us up at our hotel and brings us to the amalfi coast. I am thinking the tour will be less stressful. The only thing I am sad about is we won't get to stop in Naples for pizza!
