How far ahead do we need to Reserve Trains in Italy?

I am traveling in July with Family to Italy and expect to be spend 3 days in Rome (7th-11th), and take a train for a days trip to Pisa (11th) and from there go to Florence (12th to 14th) for a 3 day stay and then take another train to Venice (15th & 16th) for a 2 day stay. How soon should I be booking my train tickets or can I wait until I arrive in Rome before I book the the Florence to Venice Leg.

Any help/suggestions will be much appreciated.

If you go to trenitalia's web site you can research schedules for the Freccia (fast trains) lines. I don't think Pisa is on that line but rather you would go through Florence on Freccia and switch to the regional train. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a couple of years since I made that part of the trip. The regional train schedule won't be up until the middle of June. Check for the same day of the week for next week and you'll see an approximate schedule for the regional lines.

I recommend getting your Freccia ticket when you can commit to a time schedule. You will then be able to buy the most economical ticket, and probably get the better seat reservation. Florence to Venice gets real busy with early reservations, as does Rome to Florence. There are plenty of trains though.

Have a great trip! Ever consider spending less time in Florence and more in Venice? And Pisa could be a nice day trip from Florence. Of course it depends on your interests and past visits.

Hi, I just booked my train tickets through Trentalia's on-line site for our Sept. trip and found some "Super Economy" deals that were going quickly! (Missed out on the cheapest on the first leg between the time I registered and going back to purchase.) I prefer to book them on-line, so I have an assigned seat and don't need to wait in-line at the station or use their kiosks,

I tried booking tickets online at the same place and wasn't able to do so because I didn't have an account. When I went to set up an account I needed a permanent address in Italy for them to send my card to which I don't have. How did you get past that??

@rmb. Though I am yet to book my train tickets, what I found is that Trenitalia does allow you to purchase tickets without an Account.
Thanks everyone for the helpful responses.

For booking train tickets on Trenitalia, place "Trenitalia" in the Search location above. It's covered in a previous posting.

@rmb - the Man in Seat 61 website is a good reference site. According to that site, an account is only required when purchasing tickets for the slower regional trains. These regional trains do not have assigned seats and tickets are always available at the same fixed price. There is no point in pre-booking those routes. If you are taking a longer journey, it may be a mix of regional and the faster trains. In that case you would book only the specific segments using the faster trains ahead of time and not need an account.
