How early to Fiumicino for flight to Sicily?

For EU flights 2 hours is sufficient, as they are all equivalent to domestic flights, and actually Catania is truly domestic as both Fiumicino and Catania are in Italy.

However I didn’t catch whether you plan to arrive from the US just before flight or if you are staying in Rome before flying to Catania. If you are coming from the US just before the flight, then a lot will depend on whether you are on a single through ticket or if you are flying with separate airlines and separate tickets. In the latter case, then you need to have a larger cushion.

Thank you for responding. We will be arriving in Civitavecchia on a Transatlantic cruise from the US, then immediately transferring to the airport for our flight to Catania. My understanding is that we will be processed at the cruise port. I was planning to ask about how long to allow for the process at the cruise port on Cruise Critic but if anyone here knows anything I’d appreciate your insight.

That is not an easy transfer unless you use the ship's transfer. Civit... is about an hour NW of Rome and the airport is about 30 min south of Rome. There is no direct transportation between the two only taxis or private cars. If using using the train I would allow at least three maybe four hours to get to the airport from Civit.... By car would be at least an hour plus more for waiting. Personally I would not do it. It can take a couple of hours to get off the ship depending on prior port calls. Good luck

Thank you for responding. I don't understand what you mean by "I wouldn't do it" - do you mean you wouldn't take the train? Also, how do the ports visited impact time at Civitavecchia? Just trying to understand the variables so i can plan for them. For context, we get in at 6 am. The cruise line is allowing me to book flights as early as noon - There's a 12:10 flight to Catania I'd love to book but I'm not sure it's wise. I'm looking into cruise transfer or private car to get to the airport. I agree the train is too complicated with a flight to catch. Thanks again.

You need to expect more than one cruise ship to be in port at the same time. Civitavecchia can be a real zoo at disembarkation. Unless the car service has the necessary permits to pick you up at the ship, you are going to have to take the shuttle bus to the port entrance and find them there. I would look into using the ship's transfer.

I have not cruised into this particular port, but from other experiences I have learned that the arrival time in a port and disembarkation start times are not the same thing. If you arrive at 6 am, they will probably start disembarking around 7 am. Most cruise lines also stagger waves of people disembarking to prevent 5,000 people all trying to get off at the same time. I have usually seen priority given to those with higher tiers of rooms, those booking cruise-sponsored transfers/activities, or those with more “status”. Given those factors, I would consider the cruise transfer to the airport. As others have noted, this will be a domestic flight so 2 hours should be fine once you arrive at FCO, but to build in traffic (are you arriving on a week day with morning traffic?) you would probably need to be off the ship by 8 am. Might be a bit tight for my liking.

One other learning experience we had years ago when flying out of Rome was that lines were not like what we had experienced in other countries. Everyone just lined up to board and there were no zones. Not necessarily a big issue, but something to keep in mind depending on luggage and timing.

Hi, thank you all for your responses. I was able to book transfers with Princess today so that's taken care of. We are familiar with the European way of doing things, a bit different from the way US airlines handle it. I think we have enough time to make the noon flight... if everything goes well. The 1:30 is a safer bet. I'll think about it. Thanks again everyone.

Wife and I did this last Spring. Princess cruise to civitevecchia, private transfer to FCO for a 1130 flight to Lisbon. Had plenty of time and no issues.

I'm not sure when your cruise is, but do keep an eye on the airport status for Catania, especially if it is soon. Mt. Etna eruptions can impact the operation of this airport and Mt. Etna is currently erupting.
