I have a 9:15am flight from Rome to Trieste coming up. Unfortunately, I do have to check a bag. I am using my RS bag but it's slightly larger than the ITA deimensions and the weight is definitely past their limit for carry-on. On travel forums lately, I have been reading about people missing flights even after arriving at airports several hours early. Does anyone have recent data points for FCO for a non-international flight?
No recent experience at FCO , but it appears flying is, at best, 2 hr faster than the train. ( city center to city center). Adding for baggage check in and retrieval maybe only 90 minutes. How time critical is your arrival time?
I'm in agreement with Joe.
Unless you have to be in Trieste at a certain time, I'd take the train.
Saves you hassle/time/expense of getting to/from airports, security checks, baggage checks and baggage costs, etc.
It's a 6 hr 9 min train trip with a change in Venezia Mestre. Leave Termini by 8:30, in Trieste by 2 pm- city center to city center.
Take a picnic and enjoy the ride.
I would say that 90 min is sufficient. ITA requires that for a domestic flight you complete your check in and have your boarding pass in your hand at least 45 min prior to departure. So being in line at the e check in counter 90 min prior should provide plenty of cushion.
Unless you are going to Trieste after arriving from another flight, I would look into the train option as explained above. When everything is said and done, city center to city center the train doesn’t take much longer and it is definitely more relaxing,
Thank you all for your suggestions and recommendations. I am trying to get to Ljubljana as quickly as possible that day. Trieste is not my final destination. With a 9:15 flight from Rome, and. Go Opti transfer reserved ahead of time, I should be at my hotel in Ljubljana around noon. I agree that flying has more hassles but in this situation it seemed like the better option as I only have that one half day in Ljubljana.
