Cindy, where are you arriving from-is this your first day in Italy? Plan on getting reservations for the Accademia and the Medici Chapels.
I have booked tickets for both the accademia and medici chapels for those specific times. I am coming from rome in the afternoon.
Why arrive in Florence and go immediately to Pisa? The only thing to see in Pisa is the leaning tower and you can see that on your way to the CT if you're going there.
Allow more than 2 hours to see the Duomo and Baptistry. Both are breathtaking and deserve more time. Make sure you climb to the top of the Duomo!
Make sure you stroll through the San Lorenzo market as well. It will help you get a feel of Florence. Also, don't be afraid to go into the "real Florence' which is south of the Arno river.
Cindy, since you are coming from Rome, maybe you could stop in Pisa on your way to Florence. Just a thought. Otherwise, upon arrival in Pisa, allow time to walk to the Field of Miracles--in Rick's book he says it's about a 1 hour stroll. If you know what day and approximate time you want to climb the tower, then for an extra 2 euro charge, you can buy your tickets at least two weeks in advance at www.opapisa.it (more specific details in Rick's Italy tour book). I was not able to do this two years ago. We bought tickets upon arrival and had a 3 hr. wait time. During that time we went inside the Duomo and the Baptistery.
Your Day 2 looks o.k. to me. Try to get a reservation for the Accademia. We made ours on the day of arrival at our hotel--in August. The museum is closed on Mondays and closes at 6:50 p.m. You'll have plenty of time to see everything. Have fun on your trip!
Coming from Rome but I dont know if I should book tickets to climb the tower since I dont know what time I will be arriving in pisa that day. I dont want to risk it.
I have been to Italy 4 times, and I would return to every place that I have been, except Pisa. In my opinion it was a waste of time with vendors and their carpets of wares all over the place.
Unless it was on my way to someplace else, then it might be worth an hour stop.
Once again, just my opinion, and a few of the people I know that also visited there.
Really...I wanted to just see the tower since we are arriving in the afternoon and I wasnt able to book any of the sites for that day.
There was a recent discussion on this website about Pisa. If you get a chance, take a look at it: The Topic is "Sights in Pisa" entered by Kay on 5-18-10
Cindy, I did not really mean to downplay the Leaning Tower. It really is fascinating. But after that, there is not much. I am sure you will enjoy it.
You haven't left yourself any time to experience Florence itself. It is much more than a few museums and some wonderful art. I had been to Florence a total of about 10 days before I even thought about the Uffizi, there is too much to see and do there. I hope you can give yourself some time to grab a gelato and wander. Just stand in piazza della Signoria or Piazza della Repubblica and admire everything going on. Ogle at the glittery goodies on the ponte vecchio. Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo. Whatever sounds interesting to you. I don't even know why, which might sound funny I guess, but I found Florence absolutely magical and you wouldn't want to miss that.
UFFIZI UFFIZI!! You must go there. Make reservations so you dont have to stand that in the really long line. I went to most of the museums in Florence, but that one you need to do at least once.
