What is the easiest way to get from Monterosso al Mare to Pistoia? Do I need to make train reservations in advance? How long is the travel time approximately?
What are the most interesting or fun things to do with only one day in Pistoia?

You have to take the local Cinque Terre train down to La Spezia, the catch the train from there to Pistoia. You're looking at a minimum 3 hours.

You can take the train right from Monterosso and change trains in Viageggio. Even with the train change, it is only 2:30 total. Seems like the quickest way.

If you pick the right departure time, the trip will take 2hr8min with a connection in Viareggio.
Any leg on an IC train requires a reservation which is included in the price of the ticket. The trains are not likely to be sold out, but to play it safe you could buy your tickets a day or two in advance.
