How do I get from Rome to Amalfi?

My fiance and I are traveling to Italy for our honeymoon. This will be our first trip to Europe and we are unfortunately having trouble figuring out ho we are going to get around. We were hoping to leave Rome on Monday and travel to Amalfi to spend a few days there before then traveling back to Rome on Thursday evening to catch a flight home early Friday morning. We would like to leave early on Monday and still have at least a full day in Amalfi that day to do some local hiking. What is the easiest way to get there? It seems convoluted and kind of hard to plan. From what I have gathered on the interwebs it seems we need to take a train from Rome to Naples, then a different kind of rail line from Naples to Sorrento, then a bus from Sorrento to Amalfi? It also seems that these lines and buses only run at certain times and I just want to make sure I know the times so that we can plan our tip accordingly. It's hard to decipher the times for the line from Naples to Sorrento and then the bus schedule from Sorrento to Amalfi. I'm just worried about booking a hotel in Amalfi and then find out that we lose a night there because we are stuck in Naples or Sorrento for the night because we missed the one bus time ( not that that would be horrible... just trying to plan accordingly!) Help?!

When I went to Amalfi from Rome, I took the train from Rome Termini to Salerno. From Salerno I took the ferry to Amalfi. A very inexpensive option and an incredible trip. Personally, this is the only way I would go. The train station is a couple blocks from where you get the ferry. From Amalfi you have access to so many other small and beautiful areas along the Amalfi coast. If you cannot find the ferry name, let me know and I will see if I can locate it among my archives.

I agree with going via Salerno if you intend to stay in Amalfi. It is one high speed train and then a great ferry trip.

You can see ferry times at www.travelmar.it/en/

You can do it by train, train and bus (the connections are never more than half an hour apart, travel time is 1.25 hours to Napoli, about an hour to Sorrento, then at least an hour to the Amalfi Coast. I would take the fast train to Salerno and then the ferry. The approach from the sea is beautiful. If you have time, you can take the bus along the coast road for a different view.

Honeymoon? Don't miss Ravello, in the hills above Amalfi town.

One missing piece of information which is critical to this plan, though? What time of year is your honeymoon? The ferries don't run all year long - only during the warmer months - so another method may be needed if traveling during the off-season.

Thank you for all the replies! We will be traveling the week of September 7th. Will be ferries still be running then?!

Yes, ferries will still be running then. We will be there a few weeks after you and plan on doing it that way Rome > fast train to Salerno > ferry to Positano.

What I found was that the ferry's only leave at certain times, so try to schedule your train to arrive in time to catch the ferry you want.

For instance: we found that we needed to go on Italo train to catch the 11:40 ferry to Positano, or we would have to wait for 2-3 more hours until the last ferry. this website will show you the destinations from Salerno and the times. The trenalilia train got there too late for us.

@mph....It looks like you can book passage in advance on travelmar.it. When I visited the link you posted, you have to choose from Salerna Concordia or Salerno Manfredi, which one is the one to choose? Also, is it advisable to go ahead an prebook passage? If it would happen to be raining, I'm assuming there is indoor seating?

Concordia for both ferry and train. Google maps will give walking directions from the station to ferry or see scn.dia.unisa.it/reach.shtml which gives a good summary of directions.
