How do I get from Assisi to Rome on the train?

Hi Everyone
How do I take the train from Assisi to Rome on June 10, 2024 with my family of 4 adults? I have read p757 in the RS Italy book but the actual details of how to purchase tickets are not indicated. I believe the RS book also states that I can purchase them from a local travel agent but I would prefer to get these seats far in advance of my actual trip date to insure I arrive in Rome before Noon if possible.

Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks,
Maryanne

Visit www.trenitalia.com, select the language of your choice in the upper right.

In the "from"-field write Assisi. In the "to"-field, write Roma. Click "Search" to see the options.

Also, your June 2024 dates are far ahead enough that all possible train options may not yet be loaded into the online system by Trenitalia. However, they don’t change the schedules very much from season to season. To get a fuller idea of what your possibilities might be, choose a date in March or April that is the same day of the week as the day you will want to travel. Take note of your options, then go back online 6-8 weeks ahead of your travel dates to actually book your travel. Almost certainly some of the sections of your travel will be on local train/s that do not have assigned seats, and at least one part of your journey will likely have reserved seats.

You have lots of options. Roughly a train every 30 mins or so. Lots like most the trains are Regional. All trains except Regionale trains have required seat reservations. Form Regionale trains, it is grab any seat. Since there are no discounts on Regionale trains, I would buy my tickets the day before in the station. Schedules are posted roughly six months in advance so June 24 probably not posted so look at the schedule for March. Will not change much. Trains are very frequent and cheap in Italy. You can easily get to Rome prior to noon. There are five trains after 0700 that will get to Rome by 1200. There is direct train to Rome Termini at 0703 that will get there by 0900 or so. All the other trains will have one change. You have lots of options.

Trenitalia schedules will be updated tomorrow 12/11 thru early June so your date may or may not be in this update

The schedules don’t change much

There are no fast trains from/to Assisi
You will be on a regional train so no assigned seats
Regional trains cannot sell out and the price never changes so there is no need to purchase months in advance

Trenitalia also has an easy to use app

Just looking at tomorrow’s options there is a regional/fast combo
You change to fast train in Foligno
2.5 hours to Rome which is not much faster than a less expensive regional/regional combo

There are also regional options with no changes that take 2.5 hours

You will need to get to the station which is not up on the hill in town, it’s way down the hill in Santa Maria degli Angeli
Take a taxi or check bus options

Is it hard to get a taxi from the center of hilltop Assisi down to the train station at 6:15am? Does a bus run that early? I am open to either option.

Not opposed to walking but it’s about 2 miles from what I can see and I would have to leave at 5am to catch the 6:15am bus. Having walked the Camino de Santiago recently, I know walking in the dark presents some challenges .

However, if I read the Link bus schedule correctly, there appears to be a bus that runs from Piazzo Matteotti to the train station. From what I understand, piazza Matteotti is the spot where I would catch the bus to go down the hill to the train station. If anyone can confirm this, it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I have taken the train from Assisi to Rome numerous times. Good advice has been given. Typically I end up on a regional trai with a change in Foligno. It’s a small station so easy to navigate.

When I’ve had early trains I’ve asked the place where I stay to get me a taxi for the early departure. Has worked wonderfully.

To go from the hilltop city center to the train station, take a taxi. Maybe book it the day before.
I'm sure there are buses starting from Piazza Matteotti, but you need to check the times if you go very early.

It's not what I would call a walkable distance, it's a good 45 min walk which I wouldn't attempt with luggage especially with an early train to catch.
