We are going to Sicily in late February/early March. I have printed out a copy of the itinerary, which has the names of the first and last hotel, but I want to look up all the hotels on tripadvisor. Do I really have to wait until a month before the trip to do this?

Probably, you have to wait until they release the hotels. The Steve's groups use a variety of hotel and not the same hotel for every trip. Being a smaller group they have more flexibility and will move around some.

Go to your account. Scroll down to “documents” and click “view.” You’ll see a date when the list of hotels and participants will be available, usually about one month before the tour starts. Because RS uses many smaller hotels, the hotels for any one group might be different than for other groups on the same itinerary.

And as I recently learned from Jane (thanks!!), they usually post the tour hotels about 5-7 days before the date they list in your tour account. So start checking a week or so ahead. And yes, they really do wait that long to tell you where you're staying. Some who have been on that tour previously may offer up their hotels, but they may or may not be where you will stay. I'd also suggest you look up the hotel reviews on Booking.com as those from people who actually stayed in the hotel.
