Hotels with Pool in Venice and Florence

I know -- what's a guy who wants a fancy-shmancy hotel doing on the Rick Steves site? (My wife & I have lousy knees and need a pool for cardio exercise.) So yeah, a pool . . . and local color & charm . . . and good location . . . and air-conditioning . . . and friendly service . . . all for €150 a night or less (for five nights)! Oh yes -- and a roof terrace in Venice so we can watch the fireworks for The Feast of The Redeemer! Piece o'cake, yes? (Reminds me of the posters that say "Fast. Cheap. Right. Pick two.") Thank you!

I think you might be stuck with the Molino Stucky. Its on Giudecca, so any fireworks display will be far away, But it does have a roof top pool and bar. It's a Hilton. 150 euro/night? No way.
Hotel Giorgione in Cannaregio has a small pool, but don't know of any roof-top terrace. Might come close to your price range.

The only hotel near central Florence I can think of that comes close to meeting all of your criteria is Grand Hotel Villa Medici. It's not right in the center (near Porta al Prato - about a 20 minute walk), but the neighborhood is nice and they offer shuttle van service to the center. A friend stayed there on a Perillo tour and spoke highly of it. Room prices will likely be a bit above your target price, but it will be a challenge to find anything for less that's close to the center and meets all of your other criteria.

You forgot to ask for "quaint." Just kidding. I wonder if it might be easier to find a hotel room with a spa or jacuzzi?

Not sure if your post is serious or just a joke.

€150 won't get you a pool in either city, unless you are willing to stay quite a distance away from the historical center, which may or may not qualify it as a "good location", depending on your preference and needs. Frankly if I'm visiting Florence or Venice, I wouldn't consider it an ideal location to stay near Sorgane or in Mestre. Not that far from the historical center it's bad, but it's definitely not convenient for a tourist who wants to visit the sights those cities are famous for.

But if a pool is important to you, just use a search site like Booking, click on the 'pool' box, and see what you can find. Knowing Florence I can tell you that you will find nothing in the historical center that comes even close to €150 or less.

If you are willing to stay far from the city center I can suggest a few close to that price range in Florence, which, although not ideal for visiting the city (you would need to commute in by bus or taxi), would be great to use as a base to visit Tuscany by car. Let me know if that is what you want. For Venice I don't know what to tell you. Your requirements call for several hundreds dollars a night there.

The Grand Hotel Minerve in Florence has a rooftop pool and lounge but it will cost far more than 150 euros per night. I think you either need to raise your budget or lower your expectations.

Have you looked for public swimming pools or spas in these areas. I did a quick google search and see a couple in Florence. Maybe our expert Roberto could give us more info.

Thanks, folks. My post is not a joke; I was hoping that my usually-too-dry humor would indicate that I know that €150 is substantially too low. But it just occurred to me that maybe there's another way to go at this: are there public pools available? maybe a YM(W?)CA? Off I go, into the wild blue websites . . . . In the meantime, pls keep those cards and letters comin'! Jonathan

The only hotels with pool within your price range near the historical center of Florence are:
Villa Carlotta near Viale Machiavelli or the Hotel Royal on via delle Ruote. Not sure how they are.

Otherwise, for more posh accommodations, you must be willing to fork out significantly more than 150 euro.

Away from the city center there are lots of nice choices with nice pool in your price range.

The largest and best public pools in Florence (name of district where they are located in parenthesis) are:
Piscina Costoli (Campo di Marte - near stadium)
Piscina Le Pavoniere (Cascine Park)
Piscina Nannini (Bellariva)
I actually worked at all three circa 30 years ago (I used to be an Admin Asst at the City of Florence - Dept of Sports). Not sure if the City still owns and operates Le Pavoniere, but it certainly does with the other two.
They are not in the historical center where you will find none, but just a short bus ride away (or a very long walk away).
You can do a search online using the above names or simply 'public pools Florence' for more info.

You will not get a decent cardio workout in a small hotel pool. The Cipriani has an Olympic-size pool but I don't think you will like the price. The Mulino Stucky pool looks to be about 40 feet on Google satellite view.

There are two large public pools in Venice where you can pay a small fee to swim during lap swim hours. One is on Giudecca (Sacca Fisola) and the other in Cannareggio near the S.Alvise vaporetto stop. My husband has swim in both, the first only once and the latter many times. He says to be sure and take a swim cap and shower shoes ( zories) and greet the guy at the desk with a hearty "Buongiorno".

Oh, and do not try to dolphin-kick underwater half the length of the pool, or you will get severely scolded by the lifeguard.

I think it was €6 per swim at the Cannareggio pool.

Hi Jonathan,
For July, I booked a hotel in Venice, the Hotel Giorgione, with AC, lots of local color, good location and a pool - although they call it an "emotional bath" which I find hilarious! It's just a smaller pool, not to swim but just to cool down in. My daughter gets very overheated in the summer so I sprang past our $150 per night budget. We are paying €178 per night for the luxury but staying in a hostel next, so it evens out!

I couldn't resist adding my two cents worth. I stayed at the JW Marriott on Isola Rosa outside of Venice in September. Beautiful villa, rooftop bar and restaurant, hotel launch to and from Venice (15 minutes) and both a private heated pool and a fabulous hotel pool open to other guests. It was one of the most unique places I've stayed and I'd recommend it to anyone willing to stay outside city center. It was a peaceful interlude in the middle of a very busy trip
