I like the Eden Roc in Positano...not too fancy or anything...but all rooms have a private terrace with a view that can't be beat! (they also to a heck of a breakfast and are right across from a SITA bus stop)

Be sure to include a day in Ravello. There are two magnificent villas there; Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. The Cathedral, though small, is lovely. Don't miss having a meal at Trattoria Cumpa' Cosimo.

I enjoyed the Hotel Pupetto. It's on its own beach about a five minute walk from the main becah in Positano. Large clean rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean. Great restaurant, too. Google for its website.

I would take a look at the Conca d'Oro. Great value foe the price and views. Also I used www.walkingwiththegods.com in Positano for things to do. All English speaking as well and very knowledgeable.

Hello Pat,

Happy 2008 !

May I suggest you to stay in Sorrento as a HUb as it is very easy to move around to all places you want.

Let me give you some options:

Stay in Sorrento - Sorrento has the train station (Regional system) that takes you to Pompeii (40 min) and Herculaneum (45 min).

Also in 1 hour you can reach Naples Main train station with link to the Federal railway system (Ferrovia dello Stato - FS).

From the sorrento Train Station, you can take the SITA bus (that also stops at the Main Square of sorrento - Tasso Square) and can take you to Positano, amalfi and Ravello (you must go, it is a gem). 1 hour and 15 minutes to Amalfi. From Amalfi you can take a bus that takes 25-30minutes to Ravello. Positano is closer to Sorrento, good 45min. This all depends on traffic of course. You will be driving the Amalfi drive anyhow.

Capri - From the Sorrento main square you can walk down to the Marina Picolla or take the bus down as well and buy hydrofoil tickets....pg2

pg2...
to Capri, during the high season is available every 30 min. From Amalfi and Positano, to reach Capri is a bit longer and they only have regular ferries. The hydrofoil is faster.

you can go to Ischia from Sorrento as well.

With the bus SITA, you can also go to Praiano(charming).

Also, you have available buses from Sorrento to the Naples aiport directly.

Maybe it will be cheaper and more convenient than being in Positano.

Let me know if I can further help you,
Cinthya

Thank you everyone so much for the wonderful replies and suggestions! As a novice to the area I was really looking for some guidance from folks who have
"gone there before!" I was thinking of Sorrento as a "base" as well......so now I have some fabulous options! I absolutley can't wait to get there!
Thank you all!

Pat, my wife and I stayed at the Hotel California in Positano the last week of September, and loved it. The owners are gracious and welcoming, we had a huge room with balcony overlooking the sea, breakfast on a terrace overlooking the sea, and free inside parking. Positano is wonderful, and the California is a great place to stay.

Check in Rick's book for La Tavalozza, run by Celeste, in Positano. It's next to La Sirenuse, same views, but less than 100E per night- with large tiled rooms with both covered and not covered patios. If you just want to kick back and relax, I can't recommend a better place.
