1st visit to Italy and you're staying in Rome for only 1 night??? Before you set off to explore the wonders and sights of Italy you might want to begin your trek right under your own nose. After all, Rome IS in Italy and you'll be hard pressed to find as much history in one city as you will find in Rome. Why on earth would you want to stay at the Rome airport (which isn't in Rome)? I believe there may be more to this story than has been shared here.

We are going to Bivongi to lookup my husbands maternal family. We will return to Rome for 2 weeks later in the month wherewe will share a flat with family for 2 weeks. & do you know anything about Bivongi? seems like one of those places 'you can't get there from here'! we will be going into Lamezia Terme a/p to get there..

Unfortunately, there is really nothing around the airport that is pleasant or cheap. But if flying out the next day that is about your only alternative. If you taking the train, then it would make sense go into Rome. What is your exact schedule?

Brenda: My husband and I have stayed several times at the Eur Parco Dei Medici (Holiday Inn) near the airport. It has a free shuttle bus both ways and has we have found it to be very convenient. I don't know what the rates are these days but we always paid the bucks for the convenience and the shuttle bus.

If I read your post correct, you want to stay in Fiumicino on the night you arrive. Are you flying to an airport near Bivongi the next morning? If you are, the hotels near the Rome-FCO airport are not the best and they are not the least expensive. Travelers use these hotels for their last night in Rome before and early morning flight. The hotels know why they are there thus the higher costs and poorer service. If you are traveling by train, you should be able to do better in Rome itself. For hotels in Fiumicino, you can go to www.tripadvisor.com and type in Fiumicino, Italy. You'll see several along with the traveler ratings.

brenda, the Rome Airport Hilton is VERY NEAR the airport, and in fact it's attached to the Terminals by a long walkway (at the end of the walkway, there's an Elevator that takes you right to the entrance of the Hotel). You wouldn't even need to take a Shuttle! However, as you can imagine it's not in the "budget hotel" category. The Artist's Bar is a great place for a drink or coffee, and there's a nice restaurant adjacent to that. You'll have to weigh the cost against the convenience. If you're flying out the next day, I don't see any reason to go into Rome (since you're going to be there later in your journey anyway). Also, you'll be jet lagged and tired and probably not in the mood for too much sightseeing. Happy travels!

We stayed at the Hilton FCO in August 2008 and thought it was reasonable (for the location/convenience) at E100 for a double. For one night it's worth the splurge.

Thanks everyone. We really appreciate all your help. We've already booked our flight from Rome to Bivongi(Lamezia) so too late to take the train. We are planninning on taking the train back to Rome via Naples. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you're arriving late and flying out early it might be worth staying near the airport. If you have any time at all I'd recommend staying in Rome. Its easy to get to downtown Rome with the dedicated train line from the airport, and you'll save enough on the hotel to make it worth doing. We stayed at a hotel near the airport once when we were flying out of Rome early in the morning, and will never do that again. The hotel food is overpriced and you have no alternatives, you could be in a hotel anywhere in the world for all you know. Book an inexpensive hotel in Rome (this trip I'm staying 1 nite in a hotel 2 or 3 blocks from the train station, for just 95E) and talk a stroll around, get a better and cheaper dinner than you would have at the airport hotel.

The train to take between the airport and downtown Rome is the Leonardo express. Details are at http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f12f3bf7c819a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD on the trenitalia site, or easily found with google. For a morning flight the airport can be quite busy if flying back to the US; I'd advise arriving at least 2.5 hours early, and personally I go for 3; I'd rather be cooling my heels reading a book than worrying if I'm going to catch my flight back home. Suggested arrival times are probably different for flights within Europe, but I've never done that out of Rome. If you take the train, don't forget to validate your tix in the yellow box on the way to the train.
