At the end of my 2 plus week trip to Europe, I will be in Rome. I have a mid morning flight back to the states, and thinking about staying the last night close to the airport. Does anyone have suggestions for an affordable and good hotel close to the airport? Shuttle service is a plus

If your flight is mid morning and you have the time, I would spend your last night in Rome, and then take the train or a taxi out to the airport from there. However, if you are sure you want to be near the airport, I can recommend the Best Western. It had breakfast, wifi, a shuttle and was comfortable and clean.

Agree that if you don't need to be at the airport too early you can take the express train to the airport from Termini. In March we had a flight around noon and stayed in Rome the final night. Two years ago we had to be at the airport around 7am and stayed at the Best Western Hotel Riviera in Fiumicino. We took the train from Rome to the airport and the hotel shuttle picked us up; be sure to check ahead with them as to the times the shuttle operates. The hotel shuttle also took us to the airport the next morning. There was a charge for this service but I don't remember how much.

There is a Hilton 3/10th of a mile from the airport.

I cannot remember the exact charge for the shuttle at Best Western Riviera either, but it was pretty minimal as I can remember. A few euro. If you are concerned, I'm sure you can email them and find out. Also, if you are a AAA member, you can book the Best Western in Fiumicino for even cheaper.
