Stay in Ostia if you have an extra day and take the train to see Ostia Antica. Easy ride on the train in Ostia. If you are interested, let me know and I could send you detailed instructions. We are going to do that again this November instead of staying near the airport.

We have stayed at the FCO Hilton many times. Good quality US business hotel. It has dining options which is important. . Shuttle offered plus near enough to terminals to walk if so inclined.

Here's another vote for FCO Hilton. They have (or used to have, be sure to check) a free shuttle to downtown Rome. We checked in, then hopped on the shuttle to spend the evening in Rome. We caught the 9:30 shuttle back. The next day, we took the hotel shuttle to the terminal, though we could have easily walked.

I would love any info re Ostia. I am not able to locate it on the map

Ostia is a 15 minute taxi ride from FCO. It is south of the airport. You can easily find it on Google maps. Rick Steves has written about Ostia Antica, a huge Roman city in ruins, extensively and very favorably. Take away the casts of the people covered by the lava and ash, Ostia is probably superior and larger than Pompeii. It is an easy 10 minutes train ride from Ostia.

Another vote for FCO Hilton…have stayed there several times…very convenient for early flight.
