Looking for a place to stay in Rome for the night before my flight back to the US

What time is your flight? Unless it's very early, it's quite easy to stay in Rome and take the Leonardo Express to the airport. If you'd prefer to stay right at the airport, the Rome Airport Hilton is the easiest choice as it's right there, and you can walk from the hotel into the terminals.

The most convenient, though far from the cheapest, is the Rome Airport Hilton (not to be confused with the cheaper but farther away Rome Airport Hilton Garden Inn). The Airport Hilton is connected via walkways directly to the airport, and if you're departing from Terminal 5 (which may or may not be in use now), they have a free shuttle bus. My review of my stay from May 2014 is here: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy-reviews/rome-accommodation-rome-airport-hilton

However, as I say in my last line of my review, "I'm not sure I'd stay here again. It worked well for our needs, but it wasn't much easier than taking a cab between the airport and a central Rome hotel." If you're going early, a taxi from the center of Rome to the airport takes only about 35 minutes; it costs a fixed rate of €48 and no tipping is needed.

We stayed in Hilton because our flight was early morning next day. It's a nice hotel but far from the center and if it was not for that early flight we would stay in hotel in the center.

We have stayed at the more affordable Best Western Hotel Rome Airport, Via Portuense 2465. About 10 minutes from the airport. The expedia web site has lots of reviews. It also comes up as the top choice on Trivago. We booked it again for our trip later this month.

Not as close as the Hilton, but they do have a shuttle to the airport (half the cost of a taxi). When I booked a room a few months ago, for the night of May 28, 2017, it cost about US $65. But if I wanted to book it today, for May 28, it would be closer to US $200. (No idea why the price has increased so much for the same date. For May 28, the Hilton Rome Airport does not cost a lot more.) Cheers, Peter

Unless your flight is first thing in the morning, I would stay in the centro storico and take the train or a taxi. There is nothing quaint about the airport or its hotels. In fact, I was rather disappointed with the Hilton Airport when I was forced to stay there a couple years ago... Its only redeeming value is the walking distance to terminals 1-3. But, if flying direct back to the USA, you'll need to shuttle over to terminal 5.

Another option would be to stay the night before your flight in Ostia Antico. The town is very convenient to FCO, maybe a 15 minute drive away. We stayed at B&B Ostia Antico Suites in 2012 prior to a flight to Catania, and found it to be an excellent value. The family who owns the B&B can't do enough for guests, including arranging for airport transfers.

Stayed here on our last night. They arrange airporter ( small fee ~6-7 Euro in 2014) to pick you up at designated time to take you to airport. Its about 10 minutes. Took the stress out of the situation, to have a short easy commute

BEST WESTERN Hotel Riviera Via Licio Visintini, 30, 00054 Fiumicino RM, Italy

Easily walk to beach and restaurants. Also has nice little courtyard if you want to make a "picnic" dinner. Shops nearby to get bread, wine, meat cheese etc
