Hotels near Cerveteri or Tarquinia

I will be visiting Florence in January 2019 for a conference, and I have just two days to visit Italy on my own. (I have been to Italy several times so I've seen the main tourist sites.) I have been wanting to see the Etruscan tombs and sites in Cerveteri and Tarquinia for years, so this seems like a good opportunity.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to sleep in the vicinity? I think we will rent a car and drive from just north of Rome/airport area, eventually making our way to Florence.

In Ceveteri I found a place that looks interesting: Residenza Principi Ruspoli
This is a 15th century palazzo that rents rooms, but apparently is also essentially unattended after you meet the caretakers to get in. The reviews are both enthusiastic and frustrated. Has anyone stayed there?

I have not been to those sites yet, but I am fascinated by Etruscans so allow me to recommend some other amazing sites in case you can fit them in. Just over the border in Tuscany is Pitigliano, and there are many of the Etruscan "vie cave" in its vicinity, including a spectacular site near Sovana. I also really enjoyed the site at Populonia/Baratti. None of these would be terribly out of the way as you make your way north.

We have also been to Italy several times and wanted to explore Etruscan sites on our May 2018 trip. We flew into Rome, visited Cerveteri, and drove to Tarquinia where we stayed for two nights at Palazzo Castelleschi, Via Dell'Archetto 5. I found it on booking.com. It's a beautiful small apartment in a great location. The price is quite affordable, the owner charming and helpful, and location convenient for walking around Tarquinia. We were surprised/pleased to find breakfast food and a "nespresso" type coffee machine there. Don't miss the gorgeous Etruscan museum to complement visits to the Etruscan sites!

Me again :-) Following up on Valadelphia's comment, we went to Pitigliano after Tarquinia. It's stunning, but might be more challenging in January. The vie cave are fascinating, but unpaved and hilly. It can be cold and rainy in January. If you haven't been to Orvieto, it is also an interesting place with Etruscan tombs at the bottom of the hill and an underground that has been used for centuries during sieges, including during Etruscan days. Plus the amazing duomo there.

Excellent point zulie! I spaced on the time of year part. We were slipping and sliding in the vie cave even in May, so yes it would likely not be hospitable in January, nor would the drive into Pitigliano. I'd try to stick to the coast.

This is such helpful information. Thank you!

It looks like Tarquinia would be a beautiful place to stay, and we can rent a car to visit the Etruscan sites in Cerveteri.

I would love to see some of these other sites, too. We'll see where the weather and our spirit of adventure leads us!
