Hotels/locations to stay in southwest Italy

Hello All:

We will be traveling throughout Italy/Sicily this Spring. Yay! The last leg of our journey will be from the ferry in Villa San Giovanni north to Rome to take our flight. We are looking for ideas on hotels to stay in/locations to stop at, along the way on the west coast. We were thinking of doing three, 2 night stays. Tropea and Salerno are on our radar. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? You have all been so helpful in the past, and it is much appreciated.

If you haven't yet been to the Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Capri area, I would highly recommend it. I stopped briefly in Salerno on my way back from Paestum and it didn't seem to have much to offer, but maybe that was just my experience. Sorrento was a great jumping-off place to get to both the Amalfi Coast and Capri.

I stayed in Salerno (5N) to visit the AC and Paestum in February. I really liked the city. It has a lovely centro storico and some very good restaurants. There's a large sandy beach and seaside promenade. Both food and lodging are cheaper than anywhere else on the AC. Paestum is a must-see if you are interested in ancient Greece art and architecture. If you are going by car, Salerno was easy to drive in/out of. Depending on the level of tourism, you may want to park the car and take the ferry and bus to visit some of the AC. I had a car, but in February it was much relatively easy (no traffic jams, ample parking). Relatively - because driving the AC has its own set of difficulties at any time.

The Cilento region, south of Paestum, is worth a visit if you have time. Beautiful coastline with a fraction of Amalfi coast crowds.

Thank you all for your helpful hints! Much appreciated. Salerno is definitely on our list of places to stay, for the very reason one of you mentioned. Convenient and less crowded. If, Tel Aviv, you recall which hotel you stayed in and the names of any restaurants, I will be sure to take a look. We have several hotels in mind and are not sure which to take right now.

We will be sure to visit all the locations mentioned in the responses. Most of them were on our list, but it is helpful to get a few new names. Grazie!

Thanks for the tip on Cilento. Just looked it up and I have added it to our list! I had never heard of it before.

We’ve spent a delightful trip in the Cilento.
We loved Staying in this Castel about 15 minute drive from Palinuro.

We stayed in The Aphrodite room with its beautiful terrace. Breakfast was exceptional, served on the upper terrace.

The owners, a mother and son are fantastic hosts.

We also Liked Santa Maria Castelabate and it’s hill town Castelabate. Which is about an hours drive.
