We usually stay at the Intercontinental on 48th in NYC just to give you an idea of what we like. We are looking for a 4 star hotel, according to US standards. Price wise we don't want to spend more than $350 a night. I know hotels in Europe have smaller rooms. We want a nicely furnished hotel, with a medium to a little larger room(may 200 sq. ft). I am not too familiar with the names of areas, but have been there once and remember Rialto bridge, the grand Canal, etc. We don't need to be right on the Grand Canal, but on one of the smaller ones would be nice.
You can use Tripadvisor.com or Venere.com or many other websites and you should be able to find what you need. You can search by number of stars if you wish and by price range. To check the exact locations you can use Google map and see if the hotel is on a "calle" (street without canal) or in a "fondamenta" (street with canal in the middle) or in a 'campo" (square). Locations are generally indicated by "sestiere" (Venice is divided into 6 districts). Which one would you like? Any online map would be a good start to decide where you want to be. Near St. Mark's square (San Marco sestiere), near the Station (Santa Croce sestiere), Jewish Ghetto (Cannaregio Sestiere), near the Accademia (Dorsoduro sestiere), near Rialto bridge (at the intersection of all of the above)? Prices range widely depending on when you go, therefore $350/night means nothing if you don't specify the dates. If you go during Carnival there might be no 4 star hotels available at your desired price.
If you start to think in Italian money it may be easier to compare websites. $350, your budget, is about 275€. You may be hard pressed to find what you think of as 4 star in a central location at the price, any time of the year. Most Venetian hotels do not post their prices, changing them daily depending on demand and what the market will bear. They may post a range. The best thing is to find several that meet your needs and communicate directly with them asking what the rate would be. That's how most of their "on-line" booking services work, taking your details and needs and responding by email. The very top 5 star and 5 star plus places may post prices for some of their rooms. As Roberto mentioned, timing is everything. When do you want to go? BTW - you can reply to your own question here on the Helpline. You don't need to post a new thread each time, as long as the answers and posts are related .
200 square feet is about 18.5 square metres, the dimensions used by Italians.
We just stayed at the Molino Stuckey Hilton on Giudecca in Venice. It is a nice hotel right on the Giudecca canal. They have boat service to Dorsiduro and San Marco and there is a vaporetto stop a 5 minute walk away. It takes 5 minutes to go from the hotel to Zattare stop and 20 minutes to San Marco. If you go to the Zattare stop, you can be at the Accademia Gallery/Bridge in 10 minutes. You can walk or catch the vaporetto to anywhere from there. We paid in advance and got the room for 147 euros, but this was in November. If you stay during peak times, I am sure the price will more than double.
Hotel Giorgione in Venice is the only 4-star hotel I've visited. I was in the lobby area and was impressed with how beautiful the lobby and breakfast buffet area were. The hotel is not far from the Rialto bridge. The other hotel that comes to mind is the Metropole on the Grand Canal. I have passed it many times. I believe that both hotels have elevators and other amenities. If you have a particular hotel chain that you favor, you might look to see if they have a hotel in Venice.
Hotel American. Right off the handy Accademia vaporetto stop. Balcony room with view, side canal. Wonderful stay and staff. Quiet, clean.
We are partial to the Bisanzio, just off the Grand Canal 3 bridges from San Marco. Get a "Superior room with terrace". Not on a canal, but excellent hotel with good breakfast, elevators, and super staff, beautifully decorated rooms. Send a private message and I'll divulge our favorite room. Its in your price range.
