hotels in Venice

Of the RickSteves recommendations for hotels/pensions for Venice which ones have been good and which should I avoid? I'm probably going to Venice in March or April. Not over $150.00/night. thanks in advance. Mary

You don't need to necessarily go with what RS recommends. There are hundreds of hotels/B&B in Venice that are really great. I would take a look at TripAdvisor for reviews. In terms of locations, no location in Venice is bad. Everything is within walking distance from any 'sestiere' (district).

I agree 100% with Roberto. There are so many places to stay in Venice that there's no way Rick or any other guidebook could include all the good ones. That said, we've stayed twice at an RS recommendation (Pensione Guerrato) and really loved it. Also just stayed at Casa Rezzonico (don't know if it's a Rick rec), and also loved it. But you need to know that $150 a night is pretty low for Venice and will limit your options. Venice is one of the most expensive cities to stay in in Europe, and with good reason - it's amazing. Consider using booking.com and venere.com to narrow down some places and then contact them directly (find them thru Google) and book that way.

In fact you might actually want to avoid RS hotels because they're usually packed with people who think that only a RS approved hotel is good enough.

I stayed at Pensione Guerrato too and it was nice but it's right near a square where there was loud music almost every night until after midnight. I would stay in the Dosordoro seistre on my next trip, it is central yet quiet and removed for the hustle bustle of San Marco and Rialto areas.

We just stayed at Alloggi Barbaria. It is near the Ospedale vaporetto stop. It is a little spartan but comfortable. We thought the owners were friendly and helpful. We paid 110 euro a night for a double with ensuite.

We stayed in a really nice b&b called B&B Rialto. It is a newer b&b, but the owner is really nice and the accommodations were great. You can read their reviews on Trip Advisor.

We stayed at RS receomended Albergo Doni this June. The value was good and if you like old and creaky and sloped floors it has all that too. The best thing about this place was its location behind the Doges Palace. Its convenient to the Vaparetto stop (2 minutes), Doges (4 minutes), and sits on a major gondola route where you can stand by the hotel door and listen to the gondola seranades for free. Breakfast was good also.

Have stayed at Pensione Guerrato in Venice back in 2005 and our family of 4 had a huge room and bathroom which was very nice. Also stayed at Hotel Rialto right near the bridge with Grand Canal views but really not worth the money. Have you thought about renting an apartment? If you will be there for 3 or more nights you may want to consider this particularly if you have several people you are traveling with. Have rented apartments through Hotel Campiello 2x now which are located very near the hotel. They were both very nice. Recently returned from Italy and rented through trulyvenice.com a lovely 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment with a/c in Venice/Castello neighborhood for 4 people. Love doing this as you get so much room to spread out. We also had a beautiful Tuscan-feel apartment with beautiful ceiling beams in a former palazzo in Florence just behind Palazzo Vecchio. Loved it! Have also rented through vrbo.com.

Email: [email protected] We stayed here very happily - right behind St Marks Square so you have the advantage that when (not if) you get lost you can follow the signs to St Mark's and get home. Also lets you get up early and see the Square relatively crowd free and and with only the late night strollers at night. About 2 streets back so very quiet - had it's own canal entrance so can go by boat to airport/train station etc, though we caught public transport with large suitcases - no problem.
