i will be traveling to Venice in Oct and try to look for 2 nights hotels before cruising. Read lots of reviews and comments on different hotels and feel very frustrated. Can anyone recommend me one economy and decent one?

I stay at Hotel Tivoli. It is economic and decent. The hotel is a short walk from the San Toma vaporetto stop. Breakfast is included and good. It is in an area of shops and restaurants. The Frari Church is nearby.

LOVED Ca'Angeli! Absolutely loved it! Service, rooms, breakfast, location. A complete package.

Don't know what "economy" means to you in cold hard Euros, but I have to second Laurel's recommendation of Ca'Angeli. Spent 9 wonderful nights there this past September. As Laurel said, the complete package, just a great place.
