Does anyone have recent experience with either one of these hotels? Both are in our budget but I find mixed reviews. Thanks!

Can't say about any changes, but we stayed in an apt gotten thru MonteCodeno, in 2004. We were on 3rd floor , right next to Lake Como. Loved it. Dunno about hotel proper.

Kris - We stayed at Beretta when in Varenna in 2002, and I loved it. We were in the corner room overlooking the town, with a small balcony. The hotel is above a cute neighborhood bar, where we had coffee and observed the locals beginning their day. I'd recommend it.
