Hotels in Varenna

CAn anyone recommend a hotel in Varenna. I've looked at several and can't decide which one would be the best place to stay. Hotel du Lac, E 380 2 nights Albergo Milano-not sure if they have rooms available Eremo Gaudio- E 250 2 nights
Hotel Olivedo-E300 2 nights Thoughts on these places?

Yes I have, the review vary a lot. I'm leaning towards Eremo Gaudio which sounds a little funky or Olivedo. I'd like to hear from some who has stayed in them or other places in town.

Try a place called the "orange house" the owners are very nice and you are a stone throw from the main drag.Very reasonable prices,a nice breakfast and free parking if you have a car.

Sue, If price is not an issue, go with the one that has availability, fits your "comfort criteria" best, and is in a good location. I believe all that you've mentioned are listed in the Guidebook, so I'm sure they're reliable. Albergo Milano seems to be a big favourite here, but I haven't stayed there so can't offer any personal opinions on it. However, if they have no vacancies, that won't be an option. Did you also check Villa Cipressi? Cheers!

We stayed at Albergo Milano in Sept 2009 & loved it. We had a lakefront room with a balcony & the views were stupendous! The room was very comfortable and clean & I would not hesitate to stay there again. We had to depart in the wee hours of the morning for our flight out of Malpensa and the owner was nice enough to set breakfast items out on a table for us the night before so we could eat something before leaving for the airport. I thought this was very nice.

We have stayed at Orange House two times and were scheduled to do so again this past April. However, one of the owners (Mara) had a health problem and they had to close their B&B and cancel our reservation. This happened about ten days before our arrival date. We scrambled and found Hotel du Lac on Trip Advisor. It was probably the nicest room we had on the whole trip. Our room rate was E340 for two nights with a fabulous lake view and great breakfast. Since we paid cash, we got a 10% discount, taking the bill down to E306. Definitely a splurge, but well worth it. I would stay there again.

If you intend to visit Bellagio, Menaggio, or other places across the lake, Olivedo is the most convenient. It's across the street from the ferry landing, is the closest (short walk) to the train station, and most rooms have lake views, and a balcony. Restaurant food is good, although breakfast is not the greatest. Minuses? It wants cash only, and there's no elevator, if that's important to you.
