I am hoping someone on this board can assist me. My husband and I are looking for a hotel to make our Amalfi Coast/Sorrento base in May 24-27. We are a both in our late 50's and on a 11 night Rome, Amalfi Coast/Sorrento, Naples southern italy trip. We have had good luck staying in Rick's recommended hotels and the ones he uses for his tours, but Hotel Mignon is booked during our stay. I would like to keep the hotel to less than $450/night. I am considering Palazzo Starace in Sorrento. Are there other hotels in similar price range you would recommend for our home base?
Loved our stay at Grand Hotel De La Ville

Great location, easy walk to station and town
Fabulous view, beautiful rooms and a superb breakfast
I think should be in your price range
Another is Hotel Antiche Mura

Thank you! I appreciate your recommendation!
Grand Hotel Ambasciatori https://www.ambasciatorisorrento.com/ is wonderful but not sure of their prices at that time. Also there is a lovely B&B up on the hill, and they offer van service down below and back again. Very reasonable, quiet, great views from up top! Sadly the rooms that are in my price range are not available. Great suggestions though.
Take a look at il Nido (ilnido.it). It is above the city with an amazing view of the Bay of Naples. It is not expensive by any means. It's family owned (a few generations) and everything about it is very personal. I've stayed there maybe 10 times and will be there for another week in the Spring. The restaurant (sit outside on the balcony) is, imho, the best in Sorrento. Dino and his brother Gianni will take great care of you. Also - an amazing breakfast buffet! There is a regular shuttle to and from the city. It's a very convenient drop off place which is regulated by the city.
Use the Search function-there are a lot of threads about Sorrento that will include recommendations for hotels
One that is mentioned here often is IL Nido

Ah-thanks Robert!
Thank you so much to you all! I have booked Il Nido hotel and am so excited to meet the family behind this family run hotel. We stayed at a wonderful family run hotel in Grindelwald and Paris and enjoyed them so much. It adds so much to the trip to stay with lovely people. As a sidenote, I am bookmarking recommendations on how to use the search function on the forum as I have so far been unable to figure it out. Again, I appreciate all the help. Cheers!
So glad you found your place!

Hey Westie_mom! Truth be told: il Nido is one of two hotels in all of Italy that I risk recommending. The other is Hotel Ala in Venice but they have lost a few points by raising their rates (understandably but still . . . ).
I'll be at il Nido at the end of April. Do not be surprised if the orange juice and coffee machines are no longer there. I've been trying to stuff them into my suitcase for years. Usually a fight breaks out with other guests who are trying to do the same thing.
The menu for their restaurant changes regularly. The food is fresh and very creative. Consequently it's going to be a bit limited. Truth be told I usually just ask Dino for recommendations. Don't expect fast service! Relax, enjoy the view and the house wine.
Speaking of view: As the sun sets the lights around the Bay of Naples go on. Looks like a diamond necklace. You may be a bit early but it's also common during the summer for the towns around the Bay to have their own feast days and celebrate with fireworks.
Please let me know how you liked my 'family' at il Nido.

We stayed at the Hotel La Tonarrella last May, hanging over the coast line with a private beach. The only negative was the 10 minutes walk to town. Into town is all downhill, but back to the hotel is all uphill. We had a room with a view of Vesuvius. If I ever returned, I'd actually rather be in Sorrento hanging over the coast.
Have a great trip!
We stayed at the Ambasciatori about ten years ago, and thought it was (in Rick's words) "a worthwhile splurge." I presume you have found, as we did, that it's too late to get your first eight choices in Sorrento. You will need strong air conditioning in the last week of May.
Are you searching directly at hotel sites? I ask because at the time we were there, the Ambasciatori hotel had a confusing, fully disclosed, "discount to your hotel bill" scheme, rather than cutting list prices to make sure more rooms were occupied. We paid extra for a Vesuvius-view balcony room. Turned out there were fireworks in the harbor one night of our stay!
