We're looking for a reasonable place to stay in Sorrento from which to explore Pompeii, Naples and Sorrento area.
Check out Hotel Il Nido, it looks really nice and has gotten good reviews, reasonable prices, shuttle into center of Sorrento several times daily- we have booked it for October.
We stayed at Hotel del Corso, good a/c if you go during summer.
another vote for il nido !!! good luck :):)
Traci,
You might have a look at www.desireehotelsorrento.com/. It's more of a "basic Rick Steves" hotel, but very comfortable and the owners are wonderful (they speak English also). It has a nice rooftop terrace, which is perfect for having a glass of vino rosso/bianco in the afternoon while looking out over the ocean.
It's a bit further from the centre of town, but still within easy walking distance, and there's another Hotel right next door with a restaurant (which has an incredible view, especially at night).
Happy travels!
For price and value the Ulisse is hard to beat. It is listed as a hostel, some sort of technical reason apparently, but gets good reviews on TA as a hotel. No views but is in town.
We stayed at Il Nido in 2006 and it is a lovely place. Great views of the Bay of Naples from the balcony. Then (2006)it was about 80 euros/night. They have a very convenient shuttle to and from town.
You won't go wrong staying there.
We stayed pretty much in the middle of town at the Mignon Mueble, easy walking distance to train station and all of Sorrento. Clean, not expensive, and a nice breakfast. No views per se, but our room had a small balcony. Friendly staff and very convenient.
Another vote for il Nido. We were 3 women in a triple in October for 90 euros total 3 years ago.Even had a small balcony with fabulous views. Ate at their restaurant one night and had a delicious meal.
We are booked at Il Nido in October at a rate of 90 Euros per night for a room w/ a balcony overlooking the water. Seems like good value for what we are getting. Hotel shuttle will meet you in Sorrento by train or ferry on afternoon of arrival.
Terry, it does not seem like their rates have gone up much. please let us know what you thought of it when you get back.
Our family of 4 stayed at Hotel Settimo Cielo on Via Capo in July 2006. We had a balcony with amazing views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. I think most of the rooms here have balconies. There is also a rooftop pool with the same views. It is above Marina Grande. Not a fancy place but plenty comfortable.
La Tonnarella is also a wonderful choice. It's very close to other hotels mentioned here: Settimo Cielo and Desiree.
Originally, we were going to stay at Il Nido. But, we opted for La Tonnarella because of its private beach and walking distance to town. The proverbial icing on the cake, though, was a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom/2 balcony suite that we had for our family of 5. It was absolutely amazing and a definite highlight of our trip.
I'd also recommend The Desiree. While not opulent by any stretch of the imagination, it did offer nice lofty views of the bay which was nice with a glass of wine, some cheese and a pear on the veranda watching the boats heading for Capri. The hand-held shower head in our room was tied up with a plastic bag when all it took was a couple twists on a screw with my "Toolzall" to fix it properly. It included a very nice and adequate continental breakfast. It was a comfortable walk uphill from town, but there were bus stops just a couple hundred meters either direction from the hotel.
Traci,
How long are you stating? Our group of two couples rented an apartment for 5 days, with a great view, right off the main street. It was fantastic and cheap!
