Hotels in Siena and Orvieto

My wife and I plan to spend 2 nights in Siena followed by 2 nights in Orvieto in early October. We'd appreciate suggestions for moderately priced lodging from those who have recently visited those cities. Thanks.

In April I stayed at the Alma Domus in Siena and La Magnolia in Orvieto. They were both reasonably priced (at least during that time period). The rooms were large and clean with good bathrooms too. Breakfast at the Alma Domus was generous, though they seemed to have limitations on the number of cups of cappucino one could request. Breakfast at La Magnolia is served in a bar located just outside the La Magnolia--it was good too. Hope this helps and that you have a great trip!

We stayed at La Magnolia in Orvieto last fall and thought it was a good deal! I'd recommend it too! Perfect location just around the corner from the cathedral.

In Siena I stay at the Albergo Bernini. Moderately priced, rooms have shared baths for the most part and it has a wonderful terrace with a great view of the duomo. Within a stones throw of St. Catherine's church, a bus stop, and a couple of good restaurants are on the street directly behind it.

We have also stayed at the Alma Domus and really enjoyed it! It is run by a religious order of nuns, is reasonably priced, has very comfortable rooms (nothing fancy), and has AMAZING views of Siena. You must specify a view room or you may be facing a wall...that happened to us the first time we went there! The second time we had a view and WOW! Nothing can beat it. I highly recommend this great place!

I like Hotel Virgilio in Orvieto, it's in Piazza Duomo.

This is another vote for La Magnolia in Orvieto. In Siena I enjoyed B&B La Coperta Ricamata. This would not be a good choice if you are traveling by car and need parking. Feel free to write if you have specific questions.

Lew, I have not had the opportunity to visit Orvieto, but for Siena, I would agree with Albergo Bernini. It has been family owned for generations. They give you a comfortable "home" atmosphere and the service is great! It is reasonably priced, and they have a terrace with an incredible view! Having a meal or just a glass of wine there, is a treat in itself. The room I stayed at did have it's own shower & bathroom. I will definitely stay at Albergo Bernini if I visit Siena again.

We spent four days at Alma Domus last week. Try to get a "view" room on the 4th floor if possible. The rooms on the 4th floor have new bathrooms. The location is great, the staff is very friendly. This time we had a 3rd floor room and the bathroom was tiny and the shower very basic. The view was incredible and more than makes up for the shower. Breakfast is very basic, but more than adequate--we skipped breakfast a couple of days in favor of Nannini which has awesome pastries and fantastic coffee.

Ate stayed at La Magnolia B&B just 2 weeks gaga and it was wonderful and centrally located. Serena is very friendly and helpful. BTW - The bar where you get your breakfast is run by Serena's 2 brothers. It's all family run so very personal service.

If you have a car, I would highly recommend Hotel Porta Romana. It is just outside Siena - easy walk to town. The setting is stunning. It is just off a busy street but you wouldn't know it once you turn into the drive. The rooms were large and clean. There is a beautiful terrace - perfect for a glass of wine at sunset. Breakfast is included and served in a beautiful garden. We payed 100 euro for a double with bath. It is in the Italy book, too.
