My husband and I are planning a week in Sicily. We've had no problems booking hotels in Monreale and Taormina, but wanted to stay one night in Cefalu, and are having problems finding a good hotel. We had sent multiple emails to a recommended hotel, and finally called. They asked for a 30% prepayment - is this normal?

Just don't stay at Hotel Risorante La Giara. I was there a couple years ago and they have the rudest staff I have ever encounted in 8 years of going to Italy almost every year. Room was tiny-even by Italy standards.

Deb - I can't help with a rec for Cefalu, but will tell you that when we were in Sicily a few years ago there were a few small B&B's in the smaller cities (we ended up in Trapani) that requested a deposit. I did a bank wire for the one we ended up at - cost about $30 and we had no problems with the hotel.
