Hotels in Rome -- location, location, location???

We'll be arriving in Rome and spending 4 nights on our own prior to a RS Southern Italy tour in September. Thanks to the advice on this forum, we've decided to stay in a different part of the city closer to a lot of the sights, before moving to the tour hotel in Travestere for the start of the tour. I've narrowed down my choices quite a bit, but am struggling to decide whether to stay in a hotel with pretty good reviews near Piazza Navona, or in a hotel with really excellent reviews closer to the Monti area. I have a couple of friends who have been to Rome on multiple occasions and always stay near Piazza Navona, and I'm very tempted to follow their example. But then, again, a super comfortable bed in a quiet hotel might make up for some extra walking. If you've stayed in either/both of these areas, tell me what you like and don't like about them....and where you'd choose to stay if/when you return to Rome. Thanks very much!!

Anything around Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, Largo Argentina, Pantheon is good. Look at a map. All these locations are within minutes of walking from one another. Lots to see in this area just by strolling around. Don't be afraid to open a church door and go inside! There are amazing churches dotted nearly everywhere in Rome. Here's a great stroll: Sopra Di Minerva (also see "talking statue" small fountain close by and Bernini elephant statue) - Pantheon - gelato at San Crispino (just a short walk north of Pantheon) - San Luigi French Church - Piazza Navona and Santa Agnese (St. Agnes). Largo Argentina - archaeological ruins (believed Julius Caesar was killed here) and cat sanctuary (rescue for stray cats). Campo dei Fiori has some neat features you can look up in RS guidebook. You can't go wrong. Lots of good choices around here.

Rome is such an easily walkable city and even if it gets too much the metro is easy to use. I would opt for comfort and luxury over location. I'd rather take a good nights sleep and a 10 minute walk over a poor nights sleep and a 5 minute walk. Besides, it's not as if you're in the middle of nowhere, you're still slap bang in the middle of Rome. I've been to Rome on more occasions than I can recalll and often stayed farther out from the main sites than you are planning yet still found it easy to walk to the main sites AND with young kids in tow. With all respect.......pay no heed to your friend.

Hi Ruth. You will love the South of Italy tour. SIL and I did it in May. Prior to the tour we stayed at Hotel Due Torri for four days. Walking distance to everything including the Vatican, Jewish Quarter and Colosseum. On a short quiet street, nice helpful staff. We took a taxi to the RS tour hotel in Trastevere because we didn't want to deal with public transportation. Buon Viaggio!

We stayed at Alberto Del Senato right next to the Pantheon our first visit. We loved it so much we are staying there again. What sold us is not only the location, but the fabulous 360 degree rooftop bar. Very beautiful and the dome of St. Peter’s at sunset will make you cry.

Hotel Du Torri mentioned by horsewoffie has a sister hotel named Hotel Fontanella Borghese near the Spanish Steps. We've stayed there a number of times and have always been pleased. While it is not "luxury", it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com.

We have stayed near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, great locations, walkable to most places. Prefer the Pantheon area.
One time we stayed near The Spanish Steps and did not care for that area as much. It wasn’t as convenient a location. Thinking of staying in Monti next.

Yeah, I'll third what NursCyn states...

Where we were, at a second-floor apartment overlooking the Campo market, I couldn't believe how close that location is from virtually anything I wanted to do. Walks along the Tiber, cafes, bakeries, hole-in-the-wall non-touristy restaurants, grocery stores that were tiny but fantastic, laundry...no more than a 3 minute walk, and reasonably-priced enough that one could exist as cheaply as he/she desires. And then 5-10 minutes up to the main drag Vittoria Emanuele to catch a bus to Termini and points unknown.

Of course the Campo market itself was right outside the door. In September it might be a little frenetic during the day--in February/March it was wonderfully chill for us. Next time a month!
