We are 2 adults and a 8 year old traveling to Rome in November. I’m looking for a room that sleeps 3 ( preferably 2 double beds although I know that is hard to find in Europe). Some of the hotels have rooms they say sleep 3 but the room is either a king bed or 2 twins. We would rather not pay for 2 rooms since our child won’t sleep in a separate room from us. Would a king or 2 twins really work? Are twins bigger in Europe than the states? I’m finding the hotel search a little challenging. Thanks for any tips.
Hotel Aberdeen is where RS tour is going to have us stay while on our tour. I booked 3 additional nights for 3 people. It’s called a triple. I double bed and a twin bed. It’s about €250 a night. www.hotelaberdeen.it
We stayed at Hotel Serena a few years back in a triple room. It’s nothing fancy, but clean with a decent breakfast. It’s a couple of blocks from Termini station.

Here is a 2nd for Hotel Aberdeen. Three adults. Married couple shared the double, and a single for his mom. It worked great!
Hotel Roma in Rome is where we stayed. I really liked the hotel. We had 4 in a room and the room we were in had 4 comfortable, twin beds. The room was spacious (especially for a European hotel room!). The hotel is modern so if you are looking for some old, quaint hotel this would not be the one to choose. I liked everything about this hotel. The restaurant is great, has elevators, and the hotel also has washers and dryers you can pay to use if you need to do laundry while you are there. It is not too far from the train station. We walked and took cabs around Rome to see the sights. Enjoy your trip.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hotel in Italy with two double beds, and I’ve stayed also in expensive ones. I’m not saying they don’t exist but they are rare. Usually a triple is a double bed + a twin. While a quadruple is a double bed plus two twins. Standard double beds in Italy are 160cm wide, approx 4 or 5 inches wider than an American Queen. There might be super expensive resorts with king size but in Rome they would be well above $500 a night.
Would you consider an aparthotel? We stayed in one in Rome. It didn't have a front desk or hotel amenities, as some aparthotels do, though. It was an actual apartment. It did have a kitchenette, which we find convenient, because it's nice to have snacks and beverages readily available. I think that would be an advantage when travelling with a child.
We used Incentrum. It has suites in two different buildings which are, as the name suggests, quite centrally located. Ours was in between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps.
I’ve never seen a hotel room anywhere in Europe with two double beds. If you are lucky, you will get three twins. Two of the twins can be pushed together. This is very common. Even when you book a room with a “king” bed, it is usually two twins pushed together. A US king (one big mattress) is very rare.
No, a “king” or 2 twins will not work for 3 people, unless you want your child sleeping in your bed. Most likely the hotel has a fold out bed/chair that they would make up for your child. You need to look at pictures very carefully. Ask the hotel what kind of bed the child would sleep on. Sometimes you will see a sofa/seating area in the room. They just put a sheet & blanket down and consider that a bed.
Try Hotel Portoghesi or Hotel Smeraldo. You won't get two double beds but will get a double bed and a twin bed.
