Hotels in Rome, Cinque Terra and Venice

We are planning a trip to Italy next fall. We had hoped to find lodging somewhere in the $150 range but in lieu of the declining dollar rate that looks impossible for the accomodations we want. We are looking at Hotel Smeraldo as an option in Rome. Has anyone been there?

For more options...if you haven't already tried it.

I've found great hotels on this website. Just in the part of town I wanted, and within the price range I needed!

Sorry, no personal experience with Hotel Smeraldo...

We stayed in the Hotel Smeraldo in June and really enjoyed it. It's in a great location near Campo de' Fiori. We opted for breakfast at nice cafe across the narrow lane. There is also a great pastry shop on the corner.

Stayed in all three places this past September. Here are the places I stayed:

Rome - Palma Residence (http://www.romeby.com/palmaresidence/) and Hotel Rosetta (http://www.rosettahotel.com/). The latter was better, quaint, well-placed, kind staff and clean. Cost: Palma Residence ~80euro night for 2 persons; Hotel Rosetta ~ $50 USD per person for suite of 4 persons.

Cinque Terre (Vernazza) - Bed and Breakfast Gemmy (http://www.bbgemmy.it/camere.htm). Literally, you are staying in the bottom or second floor of Gemmy's home. Wonderful Italian woman. Kind, hospitable, little english, but most engaging. LOVED staying in Vernaza! Best, in my opinion, of the 5 cities. Cost: ~100 euro a night/two persons.

Venice - Hotel Albergo Marin (http://www.albergomarin.it/). Clean, sufficient, but staff was not particularly kind.

Enjoy Italy!

You can check Hotel Smeralda at TripAdvisor.com. I checked out that place as well on that site and there are alot of reviews from people that have stayed there.

We stayed at the Nicolas Inn in Rome about 3 years ago. It was a great bed and breakfast, near the Forum. Our room and our bathroom were spacious and the owner, a young American woman, was most helpful with touring tips, restaurant recommendations etc. We went in the spring and at that time the rate was about 100 euro a night if I remember correctly. Not sure what the prices would be for next fall. Website is www.nicolasinn.com.

You didn't say how long you planned on staying in the 3 places. If you have a few days in the 5-Terre, you might consider Levanto for accommodation. It is a 5-minute train ride from the most northern town. We rented an apartment there for 5 days in Sept 06 and are doing it again this May. For 5 days for 3 of us, the cost is 345 euros. If there are only 2 of you, you could find a smaller place than we are getting. Levanto is a great place and the day pass to see the 5-Terre is reasonable and trains run regularly. There are great little villages above Levanto that are accessible by bus also. Look at the website levantur.com
