Joanne, In Rome you might have a look at either Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen. I've stayed at both, and would recommend them highly. Those Hotels are used by RS tours, so the quality is good. Happy travels!

Hello, last year we spent a week at Hotel Giardino in Rome. We loved the location, the English speaking staff and the assistance that the staff provided with seeing the sites. Last October my wife and I stayed at Dei Mori B&B in Florence. Upon arrival the owner offered us a drink, we chose Perseco. We sat with him in the living room area and he proceeded to show us the highlights of Florence on a map he provided . He also gave us a list of his recommended restaurants. The service was outstanding. The location is perfect, between the Duomo and Uffizzi. Very quite street. The room was not to big or too small, and was decorated beautifully. The bathroom was fine. The breakfast was European with a variety of breads and rolls, yogurts, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. There was a walk up two long flights of stairs, which could be a problem if one has physical issues or much luggage. Overall, I would highly recommend Dei Mori. In Rome we stayed at Hotel Due Torri. It was an excellant location, very quite street near the Pantheon. We walked to all the major sites. The room was adequate, nothing exceptional. The breakfast was very good with a wide ion. Service was good. Our last night in Italy was spent here. The hotel called for an early AM taxi, which arrived on time to get us to the airport. Based on the number of choices of accommadations in the area, I would consiider looking elsewhere for the price, which was around 200 euros. Hope this helps.

In 2009 I stayed at Casa Rabatti which was a RS suggestion from his 2006 book. It is not a hotel, but a house belonging to a woman named Marcella. She doesn't speak very much English. You share a bathroom with the other 3 rooms but it is very homey and central. A fun, intimate Italian experience. I dont' have a current RS Italy guidebook so I'm not sure if its still in there but here is the contact info I used: casarabatti@inwind.it 055-212-393
Via San Zanobi 48 Black I had the most luck communicating through email. I believe her daughter who speaks more English corresponds for her. The 2006 guidebook list prices at E50 for double, E25 for single bed in shared room. These may have gone up since then.

We are with Ken and have used both Sonya and Aberdeen in Rome. Wife prefers Sonya since it is closer to Termini and she thinks their lattes are better. Sonya does have a bunch of newly remodeled rooms.

We also did Hotel Sonya, had a great big room with view of the opera house. They have a great breakfast too. In Florence we stayed at Hotel Loggiato dei Serviti. Very close to Accademia and Duomo. In a nice square. We traveled at end of November and they gave us an amazing upgrade to their 2 story loft suite. It was such a great room to return to after site seeing all day. http://www.loggiatodeiservitihotel.it/
