Don't know what your budget is, but here is a place you should check out. We have stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese many times and have always been pleased. While it is not "luxury", it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. They also have a sister hotel closer to the Pantheon called Hotel Due Torri. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. Check it out and see what you think. We've spent quite a bit of time in Rome so let me know if you need specific info.

Hotel Aberdeen is a nice, clean hotel. It has a great breakfast and nice staff. I have stayed there twice on week long RS tours. It is near the train station. It is in walking distance of several wonderful churches and right near the metro.

I have also stayed at the Hotel Selene on a BOE tour and that is just a few blocks away. Very nice hotel, but more money. You do not need a car in Rome. I liked both hotels and would stay at either one but Hotel Adberdeen is less expensive.

Both include breakfast in the price.

I can also recommend Hotel Aberdeen, having stayed there our 1st trip.

On our 2nd trip we stayed at Hotel Adler, which is a block from Hotel Aberdeen. We chose Adler because it was less expensive at the time. Both clean, comfortable and well located near Termini station and the Metro line.

You will have to search hard to find a hotel in Italy that does not include a breakfast buffet. ( Just avoid the big US chains, eg Hilton. Sheraton etc..... )

You do NOT want/need a car in Rome. The Metro works well to get you to the farther destinations and everything else is within walking distance

I always stay near the Central Train station.

I've stayed in Hotel Sonya, Aberdeen, and Hotel Contila
they are all close walks to the train station. There is a metro station and bus station all right in the area. I also walked several places and really enjoy the area.
You can look up these hotels on tripadvisor.com and see photos of the places, the rooms, maps of the area. I would recommend calling the hotels direct to reserve, you will get a better rate .
