We'll be flying into Rome in May and are looking for a reasonable hotel near the sights in Rome. Does RS have any new suggestions or can anyone give us a few to check out. Also, which train is best to use from the airport to that area? Thanks
Kathy,
A few years ago, we stayed at Domus Aurea Hotel.
Our room was clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. The hotel staff were very helpful & nice.
Breakfast is great & served in the roof terrace.
The hotel is a 1-minute walk from Termini Train Station.
You can read about this hotel here: http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/domus.html
and here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d233377-Reviews-Exe_Domus_Aurea-Rome_Lazio.html
You can take the 'Leonardo Express'train from the airport to Roma termini.
See this website for train schedules; http://www.trenitalia.com
*I just noted this on the hotels info page: "The Domus Aurea provides a pick-up service from Fiumicino Airport, available upon request"* -- this must be new because I don't recall this service when we were there. I don't know the cost though.
Where else are your travels taking you?
Happy planning!
We have used Hotels Aberdeen and Sonya in the Termini area. We like that area for convenience to local transit but it is on the edge of sights. Also have used Continlla in the same area. You can take either the Leonard Express, non-stop from the airport for 14 Euro or the local, FM1 for about 8 euro.
You could look at the comments to the same question just a few postings lower.
Check RonInRome.com to see what hotels he suggests for the area you'd like to stay in.
The Leonardo Express train leaves FCO every half hour to Roma Termini station. Cost is 14 Euro one way.
Why not get a hotel room you can walk to by just crossing Via Marsala, north end of Termini, just look for the big neon green plus sign at the Farmacia inside Termini, walk thru the indoor hallway, cross the street, and walk a few steps east to the corner of Via Milazzo.
The office at Via Milazzo 4/6 manages Hotel Mirage, Hotel Halifax, and Bed and Breakfast Caroline Suites. Good mattresses, good breakfasts. Good staff.
Very reasonable cost.
Email [email protected]
or [email protected]
and ask about any of the three hotels. View them on Google for rates.
Hotel Aberdeen is vg, but popular and is walking from termini but a safe area. Book early.
I have stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen twice ( both on the week long RS tours) and true, do book asap as RS tours use this hotel. It is in a good location and near the bus and the metro. There is only one train from the airport to Rome and you can walk from the train station to the hotel. On my visit to Rome in Sept 2014 when I was on the Best of Europe 14 day tour we stayed at the Hotel Selene. It was a few blocks from the Hotel Aberdeen and very nice modern hotel. I do think it will be more money but if the Hotel Aberdeen is booked you can try Hotel Selene. I would stay at either one as they were both nice. I also know that RS also uses the Hotel Rex. It is also near the other two hotels and I looked at their website and it looks nice, but I have not stayed there. Do make sure you get the RS guide book as it is a great book for your research and it has more hotels in it. Have a wonderful time.

Kathy,
I prefer staying in the Termini station area as it's so convenient for tranportation, and like either Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen (I've also stayed at a Hostel in that area).
As the others have mentioned, the Leonardo Express is about the quickest way to get from the airport to Roma Termini (~32 minutes). You can buy tickets at the airport rail station, but DON'T forget to validate them prior to boarding the train, or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! One other point to note is that there are two different trains running to the airport, the L.E. and the FM1. BE SURE to board the correct train.
If the hotel you choose is not close to Termini, just use a Taxi. There will be lots of them waiting just outside the front door of Termini.
We like the Best Western Globus Hotel in Rome. It is close to the Termini and to a tram line and you are within walking distance to the Trevi Fountain, Borghese Gallery, Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Viscounti Palace, Baths of Diocletian and more. Very convenient location. It is in a nice neighborhood near a university so there are lots of cafes and restaurants you can walk to. The staff is fantastic, housekeeping does a great job, wifi is free, the beds are comfy, and there is a nice breakfast buffet. Each room has a laptop sized safe and there are lots of extras here. The suites are gorgeous and huge and the other rooms are themed depending on whether you want to do business or are just on vacation. They have fantasy rooms for those traveling with kids with decor and toys that are family friendly. I love the Dreaming Rooms which are, well, dreamy! You can book and find info at their website at www.globushotel.com/en/home-page.aspx
Do you think its better staying near Termini rather than say near the Pantheon or Colosseum? Never having been there, I'm not sure of distances and if it's all walkable or is a bus, taxi or car needed.
Travelers on this forum all have their personal preferences. My family stayed at della Torre Argentina hotel near Pantheon. At termini, it is easy to catch buses and taxis. In fact, it's easy to catch buses and taxis just about anywhere in Rome. Get a map - use your guidebook - and check out sites you are interested in and your budget. Then decide. I really liked Pantheon area. If you mark Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, and Victor Emmanuel Monument - then draw a rough circle around them - this is the central historic center. Any hotel in this area is in a great location. Termini is certainly workable though. If you like lovely evening strolls - then, I recommend the historic center.
We stayed at the Fortyseven Hotel Rome. A great hotel and a 15 minute walk to everything. In one direction the Colosseum etc. in another direction Campo de Fiori etc. A 15 minute walk in another direction to the Trastevere area. It is a little higher priced but worth it. Very clean and modern with a lounge area with 2 computers free of charge for guests to use. Free WIfi which worked great and breakfast included. Eggs, bacon etc.
Kathy,
For choosing an area in Rome to stay, you may find it helpful to have a look at THIS excellent website.
Ken gave great advice regarding visiting Roninrome.com
I will differ here with almost every other poster, in that I HATE staying near Termini unless (and even not then) a one night stay. I don't know how old you are or what your interests are, but IMHO, the only reasons to stay near Termini are not enough to make it worth it: cheaper hotels and proximinity to the main train. Unless you're needing the train early the next morning, there's no reason to have it right next to you, along with the 'unsavories' who tend to hang around train stations all over the world, again IMHO. Re price, you can find a nice small hotel or BnB in any area of Rome that's very walkable from site to site, which again makes staying near Termini a moot point.
After a long day on my feet, I like to return to the hotel, freshen up, and eat in the neighborhood I'm sleeping in. Didn't have good luck with that when we stayed near Termini.
Go first to Roninrome, select a neighborhood according to what you are wanting to see. Then you can go to Trip Advisor for hotels in addition to Roninrome, and for a honest evaluation of Actual Stays look at Booking.com. Choose a hotel, and find a direct contact for them on their website (It's usually cheaper that way, but compare to Hotwire), make a reservation and get a Taxi from either the Airport or Termini.
I usually stay in the Prati area at one of the Alimandi hotels. My husband prefers Trastevere. You may prefer the Navona area. If one of my adult kids went, I'd send them to Trastevere or Navona.
A friend has recommended Ripetta Rooms to me- maybe worth looking into. She found them very hospital and especially helpful after her drivers license was stolen
