Hotels in Rome

I've never been to Rome, and would like a well-located hotel that will let me walk to transportation, shops, restaurants, etc. I'm able to pay up to $200 a night. Any suggestions?

First, purchase Rick's book on Rome. Extremely helpful and as this is your first visit you'll find answers to many of your questions about where to go and what to see. Rome is a very walkable city with a good metro system. There are many previous posts on hotels in Rome if you search the Helpline Archives. That said, here's a hotel option for you to consider, Hotel Modigliani. Lastly, please take the time to peruse the Ron in Rome website. Great resource. Enjoy your stay.

Apartments are often an affordable option in Rome. Take a look at http://www.palazzo-olivia.it. Well located near Piazza Navona. VRBO and HomeAway also have mnay affordable options. Check those that appeal against reviews on Trip Advisor.

Take a look at Hotel Due Torri-it's well located and should be within your budget. It is a nice hotel and a five minute walk to the Pantheon. They do a great breakfast.

We always stay in the Termini area - Sonya, Aberdeen, Contilla - because of the convenience to transit system, restaurants, and better pricing. It is on the edge of the main attraction areas so you will have to walk a little further but all the buses, trams, trains are right at the plaza in front of Termini. And there are several, nice, local restaurants in the area.

HI Susan Please check out Hotel Nerva-its location is unbeatable for walking to everything you want to see in Rome. We had a first floor room with small private patio and really enjoyed it. Staff was great. Ciao Mike

Susan, I'd also suggest picking up a copy of the Rome Guidebook, or the Italy book (which covers Rome) if you'll be travelling elsewhere in the country. Note that these are now available in several E-book formats if you have a Reader, so could be downloaded in a few minutes. I tend to use the same practice as Frank and usually stay in the area around Termini station. It's not only very convenient for transportation (including to the airport), but there are also some nice restaurants in that area. There's somewhat of a "shopping mall" on the lower floors of Termini, including a small grocery store, so that's convenient too. Be sure to wear a Money Belt while there, and be vigilant for "scammers". Happy travels!

Alabergo del Senato is right next to the Pantheon. Stay in one of the rooms on an upper floor...not in the apartment. Loved it. You won't believe the location!

Susan, probably one of the most difficult decisions when traveling to Rome is where to stay. That's because there are SO many options - currently there are almost 2,000 hotels and B&B's in the city! Your price will be influenced certainly by your location. Since it's your first time, I'd suggest staying in the central part of town. It's easy to walk from and you're surrounded by Roma!. I've put together a couple of postings with hotels and B&B's ranked by Venere and Booking.com. These are two of the best sesarch engines you can use. I've personally used Booking.com for most of my trips. On both these sites, the comments and ratings are ONLY from folks who have actually stayed (and paid) for a room in the hotel - Unliike other sites where false posters try to influence the rankings and potential bookings. For downtown, here are two postings: The best-ranked Hotels and B&'s for: The Pantheon Area and also The Piazza Navona Area. Great locations and great experiences! If price is option, then Frank and Ken give you good advice. The Roma Termini area (and transportation systems) can can allow you easy access to all parts of the city; See: The Best Hotels and B&B's near Roma Termini. Another less expensive option is over by the Vatican - an area I prefer because we lived there for years (okay, a little bias). There are many B&B's in this area. See: The Best Hotels and B&B's in the Prati-Vatican Area. I'm currently doing an article on Trastevere - another great place to stay. Your hardest decision might be where to stay... But no worries - almost all are good options! Good Luck in your search!
