hotels in Rome

Trying to decide where to stay in Rome - is it best to stay in the area of the Colosseum or less touristy area.
I would prefer to walk to most sites than have to take taxi or bus.
Thank You

Stay near the Pantheon so you can walk everywhere. If you stay near the Colosseum, walking to The Vatican is pretty far. The Pantheon is centrally located.. walk towards The Vatican one way or towards The Colosseum in the other direction.

Stay near the Pantheon
We walked most everywhere from there

We did take a cab to Borghese because it was raining then walked home
We took a cab for our early entry Pristine Sistine tour, walked home
And to Termini when we departed
All less than 10 euros

Have never taken bus or metro in Rome
Cab to/from FCO is fixed rate 48 euros

We've stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese a number of times and have always been pleased. It isn't "luxury", but it isn't cheap either. It's very nice and the location is great. You can walk to The Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican City. The staff is friendly and helpful. We send an email directly with our request for a booking and get an answer in 24 hours or less. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. If they can't accommodate you they have a sister hotel closer to the Pantheon called Hotel Due Torri.

We stayed next to the Pantheon, and loved it! Stay in the historic center.

Linda, that is a very basic question. It sounds like you could use a decent guide book. Have you heard of this Rick Steves guy? He does a great one for Rome. I also like the DK Eyewitness Guide for Rome. It's gorgeous.
