marianne,

You might have a look at Hotel Savoia in Positano. Some of their rooms have ocean view, and it's in a great location.

Not in Positano but Praiano (between Positano and Amalfi), La Maurella is a small hotel with each room having a water view with a small balcony. Last year breakfast and parking were included in the room rate.

We are staying at the Hotel California. That is the hotel from the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. Every room has a balcony and it's not situated too far up the hill. Our first choice was sold out a year in advance because it's a great hotel, beautiful at a reasonable price....Marincanto. But the Hotel California got great reviews too, not just on Trip Advisors, but also forum members. When are u going?

The words reasonable price and Positano are not quite mutually exclusive but you might also consider Amalfi if you find it hard getting something in your price range. The harbour is not as pretty but it is a more interesting town, with a greater range of shops and affordable dining options. It also has a beautiful cathedral and the paper museum, and is very convenient to bus upto Ravello and catch ferries in either direction.

The other place I would recommend is Nocelle. If you want somewhere quiet with stunning views it is fantastic. Regular buses run down the hill to Positano. I much prefer it over the rather pretentious nature of Positano - no need for men to wear pastel coloured trousers and drape a cashmere sweater around their necks in Nocelle. Have a look at Villa Antica Macina. It is right on the pathway of the gods and the breakfasts are amazing!

While on a Rick Steves tour of Southern Italy, we stayed at Hotel Savoia (previously mentioned). This family run hotel is in a wonderful location with excellent views. Just to be sure, request a room with a view. The rooms are clean, comfortable & air-conditioned. The public spaces are bright, attractive & authentic to the area. Check their website & look at the photos. That is exactly how I remember it. Positano is so beautiful. If this is your first time, you are in for a real treat!
