Have you stayed in Perugia? I'd appreciate any hotels recommendations. I'll be using public transportation and using Perugia as a base to visit other Umbrian towns. Grazie.
Cortona is close and has some great hotels, it is in Tuscany.
Even thought you didn't ask, Umbria is wonderful. I suggest Spoleto, Assissi, Foligno, Deruta, Todi, Montefalco, Orvieto, and I love the little town of San Gemini.
We stayed at the Hotel Gio Wine and Jazz hotel . Very nice and inexpensive m. Then you take the mini metro up to the alto town. Very user friendly! Nice little town.
I've stayed once in La Rosetta, on the Piazza Italia. Close to the city centre, a minute walking for the bus to the railway station, and ten minutes to the bus station on the Piazza Partigiani.
Thanks, everyone for your responses. I'll look into the suggested hotels. I know there are lots of special places to explore in Umbria. I've been to Assisi twice and to Orvieto. I'm using Perugia as a base because I'd like to go to Gubbio and also Spello, possibly Montefalco. I'm thinking Perugia makes the best base for those daytrips.
We stayed at Hotel Fortuna, very nice and very reasonable, as well as being in the center of Perugia, three years ago and have just rebooked fot this October ( after the chocolate festival). Highly recommended
We have stayed in Perugia a few times and picked hotels more or less at random; twice we just showed up and walked around until we found one.
The town makes a decent base for using public transit. Take a look at the FCU private line, its fun to take and runs from near the top of Perugia. Its really more like an trolley than a train. here is a map of their routes: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrovia_Centrale_Umbra
A great guide to getting around Umbria is http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Places/Europe/Italy/Umbria/_General/accessibility.html
We've stayed in Perugia at the Hotel Fortuna two times and were happy with its amenities. The hotel is very central to the two main piazze. The property is very close to the long escalator (scale mobili), which connects the lower part of town, the bus station, and the upper part of town.
Buon viaggio,
